ELISHA ATKINS Obituary

ATKINS, Elisha Hornblower "Skip" Age 70, of Cambridge, MA, died suddenly on August 7, 2019. Skip was born on May 16, 1949, in Rochester, NY, the second of five children of Elizabeth and Elisha Atkins. He obtained his lifelong nickname from his beloved maternal grandfather, an avid sailor. He spent most of his childhood in Woodbridge, CT, while his father was a professor at Yale Medical School and his mother raised their family before becoming a teacher. Skip graduated as valedictorian from Hopkins School in New Haven, CT in 1967 where he was a passionate performer in the arts, playing piano and clarinet, singing in the school acapella chorus and playing starring roles as Skye Masterson in Guys and Dolls and Malvolio in Twelfth Night. He was known in Woodbridge for the elaborate summer productions involving scores of neighborhood teens that were performed at his house (and on the roof), including "Alice in Wonderland". He attended Swarthmore College from 1967 to 1972, majoring in history. Influenced by his community service work with the Quakers in Appalachia and time spent as a marshal during civil rights protests in New Haven in 1969, he applied for conscientious objector status for the draft for the Vietnam War. His lifelong commitment to social causes took him into his career in primary care and community medicine. He attended University of Connecticut Medical School and completed a primary care residency at Cambridge City Hospital where he was chief resident, and an MPH in occupational medicine at Harvard School of Public Health. Through his work as a physician at Massachusetts General Hospital's Chelsea Healthcare Center, where he spent most of his career, he touched countless people's lives. Although humble and self-deprecating about his professional accomplishments, he leaves a long list of them in his wake, among them: Unit Chief of MGH Chelsea Adult Medicine from 2009-2019; chairman of the City of Chelsea Board of Health for more than a decade; and the Medical Director of the Employee Health Service at MGH for many years. In 2009 he received a Partners In Excellence Award for Outstanding Performance and Commitment to Excellence. Proficient in five languages, Skip was a fierce advocate for MGH Chelsea's immigrant and refugee patients, helping to coordinate a legal clinic to assist them in immigration matters, and spearheading meetings with community agencies to discuss issues facing MGH Chelsea's Latino patients and staff. Those accolades, however, hardly defined his life. His family, friends, patients and co-workers will remember him for his deep and enduring compassion and humor. It's no surprise that he was beloved by all whose paths he crossed. Co-workers sometimes found it difficult to go out to lunch with him if pressed for time, because on the way he would inevitably be stopped by at least half a dozen patients or former patients passing on their greetings or asking for a quick sidewalk consult. Similarly, many family trips were delayed because Skip had stopped on the way home from work to help someone fix a flat tire or to break up a fight outside a bar. With those who knew him best, Skip was no less generous, pouring his time and energy into supporting loved ones. He particularly loved playing games with his nieces and grandkids, taking them on outings to Santa's Village, and introducing them to the joys of music and gardening. Although Skip was agnostic, the religious among us know that he earned express entrance into the Pearly Gates; the more secular hold him dear for the radiant human achievement of having walked his talk. Skip is survived by his wife Maureen Colton; his mother Elizabeth Atkins; his daughters Kirsten Colton and Siobhan Atkins; his niece Gabriella McIntyre; his siblings Ruth, Rick, Natasha, and David Atkins; his grandchildren Dylan and Ava Issler; and many other relatives and friends who became family. He was the father of the late Elizabeth S. Atkins. Skip did not want any traditional services, but a Memorial Service will be held in the fall. For those wishing to make a donation in Skip's memory, contributions can be sent to MGH Chelsea Healthcare Center, 151 Everett Avenue, Chelsea MA 02150.

I actually met Skip in high school where we were involved in a social action "team" with other representatives from New Haven Schools.
Although I knew him for a very short time, I immediately felt his warmth and sincerity at a level not often found in teenagers.
I knew he went to Swarthmore and would ask about him when I would run into another student from there.
So 50 years later, I was surprised and sorry to see this notice in the Globe, but relished reading about his life--he never lost the spark I had seen and had obviously followed his path of peace and helping everyone he could. RIP Skip, I always remembered you and will continue to keep your memory.

Dr. Atkins was a genuine champion of providing access to high quality health care for Chelsea's diverse community. He cared about those who were most vulnerable and supported the unique mix of primary care and community health in the satellite clinics at ROCA and Chelsea High School. A great role model for all.

Sending love to the Atkins family from the Mostows and from my husband and daughter. I remember Skip as the charismatic, kind, energetic and attuned director creating magic in his back yard and the roof of his home when he was in high school and I was in his cast one summer, a little kid from the neighborbood, friendly with his younger sister . Fortunately for the world, Cambridge and Chelsea, he brought his great gifts and unending compassion to medicine, his patients , colleagues and family. We mourn his loss and celebrate his life with you.

Skip is one of the most genuine, caring, soft-spoken, good-natured people I have ever met. I worked with him on a diabetes program at MGH Chelsea from about 2005-2010 and while I never got to know him as well as I would have liked to, I have always felt him to be a true kindred spirit and role model. I will miss his presence in the world and will hold his memory dear.

We were fortunate to meet Skip, Maureen and the girls when our son Mike DeFillippi met Lizzie through Boston Children's Theater. Over the years, Medicine wasn't the focus but, the rest of life was explored, happy and sad, at parties, conversations and vacation visits. Thank you, Skip, for your hugs, laughter and letting us be part of your life. You and Liz are inextricably part of our future.

Skip Atkins was an amazing colleague and friend. As a primary care physician who focused on the delivery of healthcare in a community setting at the MGH Chelsea Community Health Center, he made substantial contributions to the field of occupational and environmental medicine through his additional work at the MGH. In the 1990s, he saw patients through the MGH Pulmonary Clinic. The MGH pulmonary department was where the occupational medicine staff were housed due to the historical development of our specialty by its founders who were MGH pulmonary physicians, Alice Hamilton and Harriet Hardy. Skip became the medical director of the MGH Occupational Health Services, where he emphasized the importance of applying the perspectives of primary care and public health to our occupational medicine specialty. He oversaw the training of Harvard School of Public Health occupational medicine residents who did rotations at the MGH. He taught us the importance of applying strong clinical skills in evaluating patients. He was the Unit Chief of MGH Chelsea Adult Medicine, while continuing to be the senior consultant to our Occupational Health Services. Skip was also the physician consultant to the lead registry for the Massachusetts Department of Public Health for many years, in addition to being the chair of the City of Chelsea Board of Health.
Personally, I learned more from Skip than from any other physician or friend. He was my role model for compassionate care for individuals. I remember Skip consistently spending late nights at the clinic providing additional medical and social support for all his patients. No one cared more for his patients than Skip. Just as important, he sought to impose his individualized caring perspective on the big picture of primary care delivery and public health interventions. His abiding commitment to community based medicine was only exceeded by his deeply felt love and care for his family and friends. His passing leaves an enormous and shining space defined by his kindness toward others.

My deepest condolences to Dr. Atkins (Skip) family. He was our doctor for years and Carlos and I loved and trusted him completely. A memory we have of him is after talking for awhile during our visit he would always ask what do you think it is. Well needless to say I thought that was our inside joke but as it turns out he asks everyone that! We laughed so hard when we found out. Skip you will be missed dearly and I feel bad for those who will never have the opportunity to meet you and laugh with you RIP dearest of friend.

I was deeply saddened when I learned of Skip's passing. He was more than just my physician; he was my friend. I will miss our appointments and our banter. He always took time to get to know me and the things going on in my life as well as being a fine diagnostician. The world has lost a great guy and a great doctor.

It is hard for me to grasp that I have lost a nephew and a dear friend. I mined his deep knowledge and appreciated his ever-cheerful smile. When we were in conversation together, he would look me closely in the eye and follow every word, no matter how inconsequential, and often respond with enlightened clarity of thought. We are so fortunate to have had Skip in our family and his loss leaves a void that cannot be filledever.

My heart is broken. Truly one of those people that left this world a better place. My mother and uncle were both patients of his and he treated them with so much kindness and dignity. When my uncle passed away, he attended a small memorial service I had in my home. My mother was devastated on hearing of his passing. Her words were "it's like losing a member of your family".
My condolences to his family, who I have no doubt are as wonderful as he was.
Sincerely,

It was a great pleasure getting to know and work with Dr Skip Atkins over the 30 years that I was part of the MGH-Chelsea Health Center. Skip was always the kindest and most compassionate physician, and he always had a moment to offer advice and assistance to his many colleagues who valued and deeply appreciated his wisdom and experience. Skip was a man of great integrity, deep insight, and genuine personal warmth. His devotion to the Chelsea community, and to all of us who will always be part of the Chelsea family, has been inspiring and uplifting and we carry this spirit with us as we honor his memory.

Maureen, Kirsten and Siobhan I am so very saddened with this news and your loss. I spoke with him at Abbie's wedding and we shared how lucky we each felt to have the amazing families we had built. I heard then how much he loved you and how much he treasured you. We embraced when we talked about Lizzie and how we knew she was present during this happy event. I find some solace in that faith but know how overwhelming this loss must be.

Skip was one of the good ones, quietly moving through a life where he tried to make every moment better for all of us. He was wise and appreciative. He had a depth of empathy that was such a part of his make-up that I can't find words to describe. He shared passionately and cherished the good in others. The world he walked in will feel his absence for a long, long time

I had the privilege to meet Skip when I started working at the MGH-Chelsea Health Center in 2005. I can honestly say that I have never met anyone more dedicated to his patients. He was a true champion of the most marginalized an vulnerable, and he touched so many patient lives through his life. He was a remarkable man. One we can only try to emulate. We are all devastated about his passing but his memory will live in all of us forever.

My deepest condolences to the family of Dr. Atkins. He was my families primary care provider for years and I also worked with him at MGH Chelsea. He most recently cared for my father before his passing in June and was so patient with us; listening and answering all of our questions. He made sure to check on us at the hospital and my father always enjoyed seeing Skip and joking with him. He was such a gentle soul and you knew he truly cared. I can't even believe he is gone. I'm so, so saddened by this news. You are all in my thoughts and prayers...Truly.

I had the privilege of knowing Skip for the more than 35 years we were both MGH primary care physicians. Although I never had the opportunity to work closely with him I had ample opportunity to see and admire his generosity of spirit and commitment to his patients and to improving health care. I know the great respect his coworkers, students, patients and community had for him, and that it was richly deserved. It was always a pleasure to see him, always with a warm and gentle smile.
The world was truly a better place for his presence.

I first met Dr. Atkins when he was the primary care giver for my dad in Aug 78 at the Camb. City Hospital. He always had the " extra" time to be with us during his difficult illness. We became close and he invited us to a party in Belmont for his dad. The day that my father passed away Dr. Atkins drove an hour to our house and then went to the local hospital to meet with the ME and explain the nature of my dad's illness that he succumbed to . Skip Atkins you were a saint walking among us mortals.
