ERNST JOCHEN MEYER

1930 - 2024

MEYER, Ernst Jochen Died at home in Belmont, on May 2. He was born in Braunschweig, Germany on June 27,1930. His father was a Jew and the family fled to the United States, settling in the mountains of Southwest Virginia. He graduated from Germantown Friends School, received the A.B. and an M.A. in Comparative Literature from Harvard in 1950, the M.D. in 1954. In 1952, he married Margaret McPhedran; she died in 2015. He worked as a general practitioner in Damascus, VA from 1956-1962. After training at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, he practiced ophthalmology near the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue and Sacramento Street in Cambridge for about 35 years, subsequently at his home. Survivors include son, Klemens, daughter-in-law, Laura Perlo Meyer; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
