Dr. Erwin Federico Hirsch

Erwin Hirsch Obituary

Died Friday, May 23, in Rockport, Maine. Dr. Hirsch, Chief of Trauma Surgery at Boston Medical Center for the past 34 years, is remembered as a devoted husband and father, imaginative teacher, stalwart and innovative trauma surgeon, avid sailor, and dear friend. Dr. Hirsch was born August 1, 1935 in Mannheim, Germany. The first of three sons, born at the time of Nazi Occupation, he was the son of a businessman and a noblewoman. The first few years of his life were marked by his father being placed in a concentration camp, his eventual release through the efforts of his mother, and the family's resulting struggle to leave Germany. In 1939, Dr. Hirsch and his family fled Nazi Germany and safely relocated in Argentina. During his youth in Buenos Aires, Dr. Hirsch took full advantage of every opportunity that his new life gave him. He was a good son, a resourceful older brother, and an adventurer, who among other things, at an early age, did solo road trips around South America. Always an avid sportsman, he excelled at the sport of rugby and became a member of the Argentine National Rugby Team. His team was the first in Argentina's history to beat a team from their English rival. In later years, Dr. Hirsch would be one of the founders of the first rugby club in Washington, D.C. Over the years, Erwin was involved and instrumental in the family's successful agricultural business in Argentina. Frequently in South America for medical conferences, he visited La Union, the family's ranch, where he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends riding horses and flying planes. Dr. Hirsch discovered the medical profession at a young age. He often "operated" on animals and "injected" friends and family to make them "stronger". As a young man, he attended the University of Buenos Aires Medical School, receiving his Medical Degree in 1959. Upon receipt of his Degree, Dr. Hirsch immigrated to the United States to begin training as a surgeon at the Washington Hospital Center. In 1966, having decided upon a career as a trauma surgeon and as an academic, he accepted a fellowship at the Clinical Shock Trauma Unit at the University of Maryland Hospital. In 1968, with the number of casualties of the Vietnam War escalating, Dr. Hirsch recognized the military's need for medical care and assistance. Although Dr. Hirsch would not receive his United State's Citizenship until after he began his tour in Vietnam, he selflessly volunteered for service in the United States Navy as a Staff Surgeon. Within a year of his enlistment, Dr. Hirsch began work at the Naval Hospital in Da Nang, Vietnam, where he quickly earned the rank of Commander and became one of only five senior general surgeons. Dr. Hirsch's military involvement was always a priority. He remained in the Naval Reserves and returned to active service during Operation Desert Storm, serving a short time aboard the USNS Comfort in the Persian Gulf. More recently, he acted as a trauma consultant to the Navy. In 1970, Dr. Hirsch accepted the position of Assistant Professor of Surgery at Tufts University School of Medicine and a clinical position at the Boston City Hospital. In early 1973, Dr. Hirsch was instrumental in the development of a Trauma and Critical Care Program at the Boston City Hospital and the University Hospital. In these roles, Dr. Hirsch was instrumental in implementing standardized procedures for the care of the most critically ill and injured patients. Dr. Hirsch became the Assistant Chief of Surgery at the Boston City Hospital in 1977. With the assistance of Dr. Lenworth Jacobs, Dr. Hirsch guided the Boston City Hospital through its first trauma designation process to become a Level I trauma center. Dr. Hirsch subsequently became the Director of the Trauma Center, initially at the Boston City Hospital and then at the Boston Medical Center, a position which he held until his death. His trauma service unit was and still remains the largest in the region. Dr. Hirsch became a full Professor of Surgery at the Boston University School of Medicine in 1986. Additionally, Dr. Hirsch was the impetus behind the formation of the Boston MedFlight transport program in 1984 and he served on its Board of Directors from its inception until his untimely passing. Throughout his career, Dr. Hirsch was a member of numerous professional organizations and was the recipient of many awards. Although his affiliations and awards were important, what mattered most to him was making the best trauma care accessible to any person that needed it. Always a voice for the underdog, and never one to turn away from a challenge, Dr. Hirsch published countless scientific articles, made frequent presentations at national and international forums, and spearheaded the development of trauma training programs in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, the Ukraine, and Bolivia. It is befitting that Erwin's passion for the military and medicine would be the impetus for him to discover sailing, which quickly became another of his passions. He learned to sail from his lifelong friend, Dr. Frank Morse, at the China Beach recreation facility that was adjacent to the Da Nang Naval Hospital in Vietnam. His enthusiasm for sailing remained with him until his return to the United States. Erwin and his new wife, Susan settled in Marblehead in 1971 and that afforded him the opportunity to continue sailing. A proud member of the Eastern Yacht Club, he could always be found whiling the hours away aboard his sloop, Solito, regardless of the weather or season. Erwin is survived by his wife, Susan, of Marblehead, and his daughter, Christina Townsend and Peter Townsend of New York City and his daughter Kathleen of South Boston. He also leaves his two younger brothers, Carlos and his wife Monica of Sao Paulo, Brazil and Cristobal and his wife Lidia of Buenos Aires, Argentina, and six nephews. A Memorial Service for friends and family is planned for Wednesday, May 28 at 10 AM at the Old North Church, 35 Washington Street, Marblehead. The Boston Medical Center is planning a public Memorial Service on Thursday, May 29 at 12 Noon at the Boston Medical Center. For those who would like to make a donation in his name should donate to the Boston Medical Center Trauma Surgery Fund at 840 Harrison Avenue, Boston, MA 02118. To Dr. Hirsch' Family
I met Erwin almost 25 years ago as an administrative assistant at the then Boston City Hospital. He was rough on the edges, but a man who was determined. We crossed paths several times, but when my sister, Karen, needed surgery, I consulted with him and although he had to go in more than once he stated "I will find out what is causing her belly pain". I am happy to report that she does well today. Marie, his long-time assistant and I, have crossed many paths in our livelihood at BMC. She was always by Erwin's side and I extend this condolence to her in addition to the Hirsch family. He is truly a man who was and should be, recognized for his amazing talent. My own father's first anniversary is this week, so I share your sorrow. The death of a father and friend is a tough road to travel, but I have the comfort in knowing that Erwin will have true friends in the afterlife. Until we meet in each other again and share the BCH/BMC life, I wish his family well.

Dr. Hirsch and Chief Residents May, 1994

May 30, 2008

The most memorable events of my life took place in Boston, as a resident in the Boston University Surgical Residency Program. I completed training in 1994. I have many good (and some scary) memories of working under Dr. Hirsch. He was, and to me will remain, larger than life. I learned not only surgical skills, but life lessons from him. His style was his own, but clearly he loved the didactic nature of his job. When we performed well, he was proud. When we were less than stellar, he admonished us to go back to the basics and "REMEMBER YOUR ABC'S"! Over the past year I have lost my parents, my brother Stephen and my beloved dog Roxie. My remaining siblings and I have taken comfort in the recounting of stories about our lives together, as well as perusing our scrapbooks for pictures of our loved ones, that keep our memories alive. Displayed in a place of prominence in my home is a picture of me, and my fellow Chief Residents Gary Cole, Jonathan Gordon, Christine Hamori and Doug Gervais in front of a MedFlight helicopter. We begged Dr. Hirsch to stand with us for this photograph, as it was a badge of honor to have come as far as we had in our training, surviving many nights of MedFlight traumas, with Dr. Hirsch at our side. I am overwhelmed with emotion at the thought of his passing. Godspeed Dr. Hirsch.

I have been a nurse at BMC and BCH for 30 years. Sadly I have seen many untimely passings of our staff over these years. After attending the memorial service today I would have tell you that I have never witnessed a tribute that compares to this and hope your family finds some solace in these memories. He was a truly respected man. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time of sadness. Kathy Curtin

Sympathies to the Hirsch family,
It was very sorrowful for me to hear about the recent passing of our dear and beloved, most respected Dr Irwin Hirsch. I consider myself very fortunate to have met him and his loss is a great sadness for me as well as for all the people who have known him, especially in Armenia and at the Saint Grigor Lusavorich medical center. We have known him since 1993 and we all appreciate his great implementation to our medical center and to our country in general. He was highly respected and loved among our staff and we will always remain grateful for his concern and his continous support. We will always remember him as the wonderful person, the model of physician and our very dear friend.
Please accept our deepest and sincere condolences and pass my deepest sympathies to his family and to all those who have known him and are greiving his loss.

Very sincerely,

Dear friends and family of Dr. Hirsch, I believe - no I KNOW, I speak on behalf of numerous members of the medical class of 2009 at the Boston University School of Medicine when I make the understatement that we were lucky to have had the opportunity to work with such a legend, fiend, and force in trauma surgery. Just a 2.5 wk rotation through this service was enough for this man to leave a lasting impression. Without a doubt, his spirit and prowess lives on at the BMC, in the trauma unit, in the surgery department, in the residents, in the staff, and in the students.

To the Hirsch family,
I am truly sorry for the loss of your loved one. Dr. Hirsch saved my life back in April 1998. My husband and I were in an awful motorcycle accident. As already mentioned, my husband firmly directed the EMTs to take us to BMC ER because of it's reputation for being the best trauma unit to go to. I know Dr. Hirsch was a large reason for it being that way.
I remember Dr. Hirsch waiting for us as we came in that night. He looked grim and told me they wouldn't be able to save my lower leg. I lost 4 times the amount of blood in my body, had a broken upper leg, severly crushed lower leg and he did exploratory surgery to make sure my mid section was fine.
He saved my life & worked on my husband as well. My husband suffered a broken leg in 2 places, almost loosing his foot.
I am really grateful that I got to visit him a year later , all patched up and walking with a prosthesis, and able to thank him.
God bless his family, friends, colleagues and all that he worked with at BMC.

To The Hirsch Family and all of his colleagues @ BMC
I am grateful I had the privelege to work with Dr.Hirsch throughout my past 6 years @ BMC. He was amazing. I saw firsthand the miracles of lifesaving measures he was directly responsible for. Whenever I personally had a family member or a friend with a problem his first words to me were "have them get copies of there xrays, scans and have them come into my clinic". He saved the life of a friend who was in a horrible motorcycle crash. Thankfully her husband overheard the paramedics say they were going to another hospital, he rallied (as he was also traumatized) and yelled "NO you are taking us both to Boston City" I truly believed she may have died had Dr. Hirsch not interrupted her death. I had great respect for him. When working with him he demanded you attention and follow through. This was easy as you knew whatever he said went, and was always right, it could be no other way. I was fortunate to have met him and again been witness to his God given instinct and talent. Please God may his spirit forever guide the minds and hands of the Trauma team @ BMC.

Dear Hirsch family,
We met Dr. Hirsch in 2004 after I became ill. After being in and out of hospitals for 3 months I met Dr. Hirsch, he set out a plan and thanks to him I am back to myself. I will never forget his smile, and the way he would walk in with a special hello. You all are in our thoughts and prayers. We miss you Dr. Hirsch, may you rest in peace.

I made a guest book entry a few minutes ago, describing how we worked together, but how could I forget that Dr Erwin Hirsch treated each one of the Levy's during the 16 years that we have known him? Me (broken hand), daughters (broken ankle, surgery), and husband (disk). We are in his debt.

To the Hirsch family,
I write these words in great sadness and disbelief at the passing of a man who was larger than life. We worked on many international programs--me coordinating and him out there on the front lines in Armenia, Ukraine, Russia, Czech Republic, Hungary, developing trauma training programs with IAEA partners from Vienna. Dr Massoud Samiei, whose message appears below, joins me in wishing the Hirsch family well in this troubled time. I know that Erwin Hirsch's compass always pointed home--may he rest in peace.

My condolences to your family. I cried when I read the sad news for I am also one of the many that Dr. Hirsch saved. July 23, 2000 I was struck by a car at Logan Airport and my left leg was severed at the scene. I was brought to BMC & Dr. Hirsch saved my life. I coded 3 times, had the last rights administered, and was put in an induced coma. My family said good bye, but Dr. Hirsch wouldn't let me go. I wish I could have been there for him. I still laugh when I remember how he said to my husband one day when he was visiting me, "What are you doing here?, go home & build a ramp & get rid of all the obstacles in the house, your wife will be home in 3 days." He loved all his patients, and no matter how gruff he was we knew it was with the best intentions. The medical field has lost one of the best.

To Mrs. Hirsch, his daughters and family,
It is with immeasurable pain and sorrow that I write this to you. Dr. Hirsch was a moving force in my recovery from bacterial meningitis in 1996. Together with my Dad, husband and son he formed the fourth corner of the square of encouragement and miraculous healing which took place over the months and years spent at BMC. He not only saved my life but my hands and feet as well and were it not for his practice of not only medicine but common sense the outcome would have been bleak indeed. We spent some quality time together over the course of ten surgeries and indeed laughed in the OR. We talked of sailing, the Vineyard and it's surrounding waters and how he loved the water as I do. He went to bat for me numerous times and took my calls over the years with grace and humor. I have lost my Dad and now Dr. Hirsch and there will forever be a void in my heart. They made me who I am today and what I do now with my life. I wish him Godspeed, a fair wind and tide to guide him to Heaven and a seat of honor with the angels. He has earned it. My prayers are with you all at this sorrowful time now and every day to come.

To the Hirsch Family,

My husband and I met Dr. Hirsch in June of 2001 and continued treatment with him up until now. My husband was very sick when he arrived at BMC and if it wasn't for Dr. Hirsch my husband would not be here. There are not enough words to describe what an important part of our lives he has been. Any time we speak of Dr. Hirsch, we refer to him as the "man who saved my husband/daddy". He really was a miracle worker. He will be deeply missed. Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. Dr. Hirsch will always be in our lives. He was a great doctor and friend.

To the family of Dr. Hirsch,
Not that you need to be told, but Dr. Hirsch was a truly wonderful man. He saved my Dad's life when he was crushed by a truck during the blizzard of 78. I was around 12 at the time and I didn't meet Dr. Hirsch at that time. I met him in my late my late 20's when he did another major surgery on him. I'll never forget the first time I met him. I was with my Dad at BMC right before surgery and the doors opened. In comes Dr. Hirsch dancing like a ballerina! I thought I was going to fall over laughing. My dad just rolled his eyes and shook his head. Dr. Hirsch came out of surgery and he sat me down to talk. He had tears in his eyes. He said he wasn't sure that my dad would make it. I felt so bad, I could see the love he had for my father. Well my dad made it, like I knew he would. I called Dr. Hirsch every two days after the surgery (it was a long process/recovery). He always took my calls or called me right back. My father was giving me a hard time about rehab. Dr. Hirsch said "Don't worry, I'll take care of him, he won't give you a hard time." and my dad didn't. My dad loved and respected him, feared him as well. My dad doesn't throw his feelings around, but he always talked about Dr. Hirsch with great love and respect which is well deserved. May your memories bring you comfort. The world has suffered a great loss.

My family was so saddened to hear of Dr Hirsch's tragic accident. My husband was brought to BMC Trauma Unit with an aortic transection and multiple crumbled ribs caused by an automobile accident and it was Dr Hirsch who was waiting for his ambulance and his extraordinary knowledge quickly diagnosed the situation and helped to save my husband's life and help me get thru this horrific surgery. He was so compasionate and quick to answer any questions or concerns I had. He followed my husband from the ICU to the surgical floor and then to his after discharge visits. I could never thank him enough for all his comfort and knowledge.. It is truly a tragedy to lose this man. My entire family want to express our deepest condolences to Dr. Hirsch's family.

I am so sorry for your loss. Dr', Hirsch will be dearly missed. From what I knew of Dr. Hirsch, he was devoted to his work, he was a compassionate man, a proud man, a respectable man and we all can't deny, a gruff man at times.
I was in a fierce motorcycle accident in Sept. 2002 and was med flighted to BMC. There I was worked on for 12 hours by Dr. Hirsch and his prodigious team of physicians, nurses and medics. Shortly after, I was placed in an induced coma. At this time Dr Hirsch asked my wife if our 2 kids had seen their father. She said they had not, she was waiting for the weekend but Dr. Hirsch thought it better for them to see Dad before the weekend just 'in case'. (compassionate).
Ahhh yes, every morning he and his troupe of knowledgable interns would wake me up at 5 am (and I do think he used to enjoy it as I saw the smirk on his face).
There was the time he came into my hospital room while I was on my computer (I always had my p.c. with me) and he seized it. As I looked at him he fiddled with it for a moment in front of his colleagues and then gave it back to me with a big smile and said, "Since you work in nuclear power you may be interested in this". I took it back and looked and there was the Nuclear Accident Prepareness Program web site that he had developed. I was impressed.(Proud)
It was a long three months for me at BMC and during that time we developed quite a bond. One time, around Halloween, a friend had brought in a pumkin for me and on it was painted the Harley Davison logo. Well wouldn't you know it, here comes Dr. Hirsch and without even speaking a word walks over to the far side of the room where the pumpkin was sitting on the window sill, turns it around and we never spoke about it. And the pumpkin never moved from that spot. I was too afraid to move it. (Respect)
1 1/2 yrs after my accident Dr. Hirsch finally gave the 'ok' for my colostomy closure. Well after vacationing I developed an infection and I ended up back at BMC. When Dr. Hirsch entered the room, he yelled at me for 5 minutes about how "We didn't save you so you could go out and do this to yourself" and "How could you do this to your body after all we have done for you". I was shocked, I was startled, I couldn't believe he was saying this. (Gruff but Compassionate)
I am just one person among many who has been saved by Dr. Hirsch and I only wish that someone was there to save him during his time of need.
a very very grateful former patient and always friend

My husband Joe App RN worked with Dr Hirsch @BCH/BMC for almost 25 years. I have heard many amazing stories & concluded that BCH/BMC was/is a great place to go if you've been shot or stabbed.

However it wasnt just trauma that Dr Hirsch excelled at, in 2002 I had a health crisis and was terrified. Joe brought my films in for Dr Hirsch to look at, I was in his office in clinic the next day. He listened to me & made me feel safe.

He coordinated my care @ BMC which showed a rare tumor in my stomach (not what I had gone in for) A member of his team was able to remove it endoscopically. I am having another smaller one removed this week, had Dr Hirsch not ordered that original upper endoscopy things may not have turned out so well for me. A few days later he operated on me to remove a benign adrenal tumor. He visited me several times while I was in the hopsital.

I am SO GLAD that I was able to acknowledge him with a personal note recently, I had hoped to run into him Tuesday @ BMC and am so very sorry for his loss.

I had the pleasure of meeting this great man in Jan. '07 when my dad was taken to BMC from a terrible fall. Dr. Hirsch and his team worked on him as me and my son waited in a private room. Dr. Hirsch came in, held my hands and told me that he had severe brain damage and their was nothing more they could do. My dad had a DNR request and didn't want to be hooked up to any machines and I had to make that call. Dr. Hirsch looked at me and said, if you were my daughter, I would want you to make that call and you're doing the right thing. He was so compationate, a truly great man. As hard as his death is to accept, I'm happy for him that after giving so much for so many years, he died doing something that he really enjoyed. May your memories and the memories that thousands of people have get you through this time. I have Stage 4 Ovarian Cancer am being treated at BMC also and have met many with the devotion and caring that Dr. Hirsch exemplified..... This man truly touched my life.......

Dr. Hirsch mentored our daughter, Tina, who is now practicing oncological surgery at Rush North Shore Medical Center and is an assistant professor of surgery at Rush Medical College. We remember her telling us of the wonderful training she received under his guidance. The world was made richer by his presence and contributions
. Our deepest sympathy on this sudden great loss.

My family was deeply saddened to hear of Dr. Hirsch's tragic passing. Our teenage son suffered multiple traumas in 12/06 from a car accident and we were blessed that this extraordinary man and doctor was at BMC that night and saved his life. We will never forget him. Our sympathies are with his family as they mourn the loss of this beloved man. He will truly be missed.
