EVAN LAWSON Obituary

LAWSON, Atty. Evan T. Noted Boston Attorney passed away on Sunday, June 23, 2013 following a hard-fought battle with cancer. Mr. Lawson is survived by his beloved wife of 34 years, Hon. Joellen M. After graduating Boston University School of Law in 1967, Mr. Lawson had a long and distinguished career devoted to the art and science of trial work. He was a founding partner in the firm of Lawson & Weitzen, LLP. Among his proudest achievements, Mr. Lawson was President of the Provincetown International Film Festival, celebrating its 15th year, and Coach of the highly successful Nauset Regional Middle School mock trial program. A man of many passions, Mr. Lawson was a long time patron of the Provincetown artistic community, as well as an avid golfer, sailor, birder and photographer, participating in many photographic expeditions of the Pamet River, the Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge, and the Cape Cod National Seashore. My deepest sympathies to the Lawson family. Evan and I were apartment mates at BU back in the early 60's. I was always impressed by his intelligence and social skills. We would
compete on the chess board where he usually won. Although we never reconnected in person again after BU I will always remember him and miss him.

I just found out about Evan's passing yesterday, after returning from a summer in San Francisco. I am so sorry. I met Evan in 1969, when we worked together gathering the research (pre-computers) that led to the publication in 1970 of the book that triggered the reform of the lower criminal courts, "The Quality of Justice in the Lower Criminal Courts of Metropolitan Boston." He and Joellen were loyal major supporters of Health Law Advocates, a health access public interest law firm founded in 1996. Although we did not see each other much over the 43 years since we worked together, whenever we did, I encountered a warm, down-to-earth, and altogether fine man. I am so sad he is gone.

Joellen
Yesterday's memorial service was inspirational & insightful to our group from the Nauset High Mock Trial Team. The students spent the trip back to the Cape reflecting on their experiences with Evan. We hope to field a team next year that will make Evan proud! We are so sorry for your loss.

Joellen, Allie and Tony, I came to know your Dad in very different ways through each of you -- through your acts and through the stories I heard about you as a family. And, what impressed me most is exactly that - you are very much a family, one that brings goodness to this troubled world in so many ways. You have been, are and will always be a tribute to Evan because the family you forged together will stay together and will continue even in his absence. My love to each of you. Susan Maze-Rothstein

Evan tirelessly donated his time and energy to our inaugural mock trial team at Nauset High School, but most of all, he inspired our students with his passion for the law. We will miss him and on behalf of the high school, send our condolences to his wife Joellen, and all his family.

Joellen, Allie, and Tony,
I just heard about what happened to Evan and I am so very sorry. I can't even imagine the pain you are going through right now. I know how important Evan was to your family and I heard nothing but wonderful things about him all of the tIme from my brother. My brother really loved him and Evan treated him like a son. I will always be grateful to Evan for that. I know how proud he will be of you Allie when you graduate from law school next year. If you need anything please don't hesitate to contact me. Again my heart goes out to all of you. Evan and all of you are in my thoughts and prayers.

Love,
Alyssa Wolf (Todd's sister)
