GENEVIEVE MEREWETHER

MEREWETHER, Genevieve (Evans) Of Lexington, 98, died peacefully on Tuesday, October 2, 2012 at Brookhaven in Lexington, Massachusetts, where she had lived for the past 15 years. Born on January 16, 1914 in Shreveport, Louisiana where she grew up, she was a graduate of Stevens College in Missouri, and received a Bachelor of Journalism from the University of Missouri. In 1937 she married Arthur F. Merewether, originally from E. Providence, R.I., and is survived by their four children, Diana G. Merewether of Arlington, Massachusetts, Catherine M. Guilmet of Norcross, Georgia, Francis C. Merewether of West Fairlee, Vermont, and James W. Merewether of New York, New York, as well as six grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and five nieces and nephews. She was a longtime resident of Bayside, New York, where she was an active member and an officer of the Democrats for New Politics. At Brookhaven she continued her political activity, in addition to being chairperson of the Recycling Committee, and a frequent contributor to The Voice, Brookhaven's community newspaper. She enjoyed traveling to many parts of the globe, first with her husband, and then with her daughter, Diana. When she could no longer travel, she took her journeys through books, having helped start a book club at Brookhaven which exists to this day. She was an avid reader to the end. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, October 28, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. in the Payson Park Church, 365 Belmont St., Belmont, Massachusetts.
