AMVETS Post 333 Adjutant Joyce Burchsted and Cape Cod Veterans Inc. : We lost another World War II hero, on Friday, March 6th. George Willard Will Woodruff, 97, of Harwichport, died at Cape Cod Hospital after suffering a fall at home. Mr. Woodruff was excited about going to the Grand Marshalls dinner and was planning to ride on the Veterans Trolley for the St. Pattys Day Parade. The Grand Marshalls of the Parade this year were our World War II Veterans. I had interviewed him on the phone but also visited him at the hospital after the fall. Will grew up in Newton. At 17, he absconded from the family home in the middle of the night to join the Army and got sprayed by a skunk on his way through his neighbors yard. He managed to hitchhike to New York, (pretended the driver had hit a skunk), enlisted and served as a combat cameraman with the 6th Infantry. He took live footage of battles in the Southwest Pacific during the war, from New Guinea to Japan and carried a 35 mm Eyemo Camera with 100 feet of film. The one time he parachuted, they dropped him too low into Corregidor Island, Philippines, and he got injured. He managed to take his movies anyway. He was awarded the Purple Heart for his amazing efforts. He returned home, married, had 4 boys and a very successful career in education. We honor this local hero, Thank him for his service and may be rest in Peace! God Bless you, Sir!
