GILBERT WOOLLEY Obituary

WOOLLEY, Gilbert K. Gilbert K. Woolley, of Newton Centre, 94 years old, died of pneumonia and lung cancer in Newton-Wellesley Hospital on January 11th. Gil was born in a suburb of Nottingham, England. He was a "Sherwood Forrester". In the British Army – stationed in Germany – towards the end of WWII. He became a fluent German speaker. Gil and his first wife, Margaret, moved to Canada and then to the United States. They lived in Concord, Mass. Gil – who had become an engineer – initially worked for a company that made medical equipment but later became a pioneer in the computer industry, working first for Honeywell and then for Digital Equipment Company (DEC). On October 10, 1982 he married Carole Simon and moved from Concord to Newton Centre. He lived there with Carole and -- for her childhood years -- her daughter, Miranda. He was an excellent step-father to Miranda and, among many other things, taught her how to drive standard shift. Gil was an early member of the Sierra Club and had a lifelong interest in protecting the environment. In his younger years he was an enthusiastic downhill skier. In his later years he often played chess. Visiting Hours: A reception will be held at his home on 9 Whittlesey Road in Newton on January 27, 2018 from 1-4pm.

Dear Carol and family,
I was so fortunate to have had the chance to know Gil. He was a true "gentle"man and I appreciated your Christmas cards for so many years. He fought so many battles to make the world a better place for all of us.
