H. HARWOOD Obituary

HARWOOD, H. Rushton Jr. 96, died peacefully at Holbrook Health Center at Piper Shores on July 14, 2014. Born in Springfield, MA, the son of Harry R. and Mildred Regina (Dillenback) Harwood, Rush graduated from Classical High School in 1935, Harvard University in 1939 and Harvard Business School in 1941. On May 9, 1942, Rush married Anna Hobbs in Boston, MA and that day received his orders from the Navy to serve in WWII as Lieutenant on the U.S.S. Monticello. In 1951, they built a home in Winchester, MA where they lived for 52 years before moving to Piper Shores in Scarborough, ME. Rush first worked at Container Corporation of America in Chicago, IL and then for Thomas Strahan Co., Chelsea, MA. From there, he had a long career in banking and investments, beginning as Treasurer with Suffolk Franklin Savings Bank, and on to Vance Sanders & Co., Inc., United Investment Counsel, Inc. and The First National Bank of Boston. Enthusiastically embracing a sense of civic duty, Rush made numerous contributions to the Winchester community such as Chairman of the Republican Town Committee, Registrar of Voters, Town Meeting Member, Finance Committee Member, Director of Winchester Red Cross and WHS Parent-Faculty Assn board member, to name a few. A longstanding 33rd degeree Mason, Masonry had great significance in his life as did the First Baptist Church of Winchester where he was Chairman of the board of deacons. Rush loved to travel and enjoyed taking his family on trips throughout Canada, the U.S. and Europe. He also cherished sailing from Marblehead Harbor, MA on their boat, the "Warema" named for his three children Walter, Regina and Martha, and vacationing in Cape Cod, MA. In his retirement, he planned over 30 group trips that took Rush, Anna and many dear friends to every continent on the globe. Always quick to share a pun, Rush was a gentleman, devoted husband and father, easy-going and likeable with an ever-present upbeat attitude. Though he will be sorely missed, he will always be remembered for his sense of humor, loyalty, integrity, positive outlook and love of family and friends, keeping him ever close in our hearts. Rush was predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Anna Hobbs in 2006 and his son, Walter Hobbs Harwood of Portland, OR in 2008. He is survived by two daughters, Regina Harwood Klooster and husband Karl of McMinnville, OR and Martha Harwood McDavitt and her husband Stephen of Falmouth, ME; a daughter-in-law, Carla Harwood of Portland, OR; four grandchildren, Joshua Harwood and wife Sarah of Portland, OR, Jessica Lopez and husband Ricardo of Portland, OR and twins, Anna and Katherine McDavitt of Falmouth, ME; and two great grandchildren, Noah and Maya Harwood of Portland, OR.There will be no visiting hours. A private family burial will be held in Maine. There will be a Memorial Service at 1 p.m. Sunday, August 17, 2014 at Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Rd., South Portland, ME.
