Sorry to hear of Herb´s passing. A fine researcher and surgeon and my father figure when I worked in his lab at Harvard. A true gentleman!

From Steve Gerzof, MD, Radiologist. If this is the same "Herb: I knew when I was a "junior attending" at University Hospital in Boston (1972-74) when the Yom Kippur War broke out. We found each other at the El AL Airlines gate at Kennedy Airport along with the Chief of Thoracic surgery at UH, Robert Berger. all of us on our way to Israel as volunteer doctors, they at Hadassah Hospital, while I was posted at the old Shaari Tzedek Hospital in Jerusalem. Back in the US, he had a problem with a patient at UH which I solved with a very complicated sinogram-replacement of a patient' s self-removed abscess drain. HIs cooperation with me on replacing this drain under Fluoroscopy in Radiology and the actual totally unexpected success of this "intervention" became the background (my Case #1) for the later development of the then-controversial, but now standard procedure, for Percutaneous Abscess Drainage guided by CT and Ultrasound.
It was an important basis for my developing the new subspecialty of Interventional Radiology. He was a wonderful man and clearly thought ahead of his time... in his respect for and cooperation with other specialties.
