Ida Lutz Obituary

SISTER IDA MARY LUTZ 85, of Kingston, departed this life on August 10, 2016. Sister Ida Mary sang a song of love and faithfulness as a Sister of Divine Providence. She opened herself to the gift of Providence and, in communion with her Sisters, committed herself to co-create a world of compassion, justice and peace. Valeria Ann was the third of six children born to Mathilda Yester and George Lutz in Etna, PA. She entered the Community from All Saints, Etna on December 27, 1949. Ida Mary began her teaching career in Pittsburgh, PA, but in 1958 responded to the call to minister with her Sisters in the formation of Our Lady's Providence in Kingston, MA. She dedicated a significant portion of her life to teaching science, spending more than forty-five years as a teacher and/or principal at Sacred Heart High School. During her years as Provincial, 1981-1990, Ida Mary oversaw the construction of the Home Care Annex, later named the Lourdes Center. As a Board Member for the Plymouth Area Coalition for the Homeless, she was instrumental in the Province's donation of land where a shelter for homeless could be built. Ida Mary pledged her love forever and joyfully shared her gifts and lived in service to others, the Church, and the universe, and in the spirit of Chardin, she harnessed her energies for a love that never ends. Loving sister to George Lutz of PA, Nancy Feineigle of PA, Gilbert Lutz of PA, Gregory Lutz of PA, and Rev. Gerald Lutz. Visiting hours will be held on Monday, August 15th at the Providence House, 363 Bishop's Highway, Kingston, from 2-8:00 PM. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, August 16th at 3:30 PM at the Sacred Heart High School Chapel. Interment will be in Our Lady of Divine Providence cemetery, Kingston. Donations may be made in Sr. Lutz's memory to the Sisters of the Divine Providence, 363 Bishop's Highway, Kingston, MA 02364. To offer condolences please visit www.shepherdfuneralhome.com. I graduated from Saceed Heart in the class of 2001. I had Sister Ida Mary for Chemistry Junior year, from 1999-2000.

Her Chemistry class was my favorite! I remember feeling such a sense of wonder as I delved into the microscopic world of reactions, and I felt like I was connecting to the primal engine of creation in doing so. I now recognize, with the added years of adulthood, that this must be how Sister Ida Mary, herself, felt about it.

The motto of the school was "Veritas et Caritas".
I laughingly said to a friend and classmate, not long ago, that that is pretty much the most noble thing there could ever possibly BE -- "truth and caring". She definitely lived out the virtues in that motto.

She once lent me a crucible, a small vessel meant to hold reactants during heating, for a school project that i wanted to carry out. I was trying to synthesize my own rubies, lol.

The rubies, perhaps unsurprisingly, never came into being, and the crucible cracked slightly, so she just had me keep it. I still have it -- a little memento of how things don't always go to plan, but the help and support of good people endures, always.

Rest in peace, Sister Ida Mary. You loved and were loved.

I loved her. I was in her class my senior year. (1966) She sat me right in front of her and in my year book she wrote. I put you in front of me so I could always look up and see someone doing what they were suppose to be doing. lol It made me feel good at the time and I still remember it.

God Bless You Sister......
with Love,

Sister Ida Mary was one of the most kind, genuine people I've known. She taught me how to sew at Camp Mishannock and always made me feel so special and had such a calming presence. At camp I was always running around, reeking havoc, but Sister Ida Mary had a calming effect on me that made me want to behave, listen, and learn, because she was so nice and helpful. Although it's been 15+ years since I've seen her, she will live on in my memories for much longer. Rest in peace.

Not one sparrow goes forgotten before our God or falls to the ground without His knowledge. Certainly He remembers your loved one. I extend my sincere condolences. (Luke 12: 6,7)
