J. PORTER Obituary

PORTER, J. Brooks James Brooks Porter, a longtime resident of Brookline, Massachusetts, died surrounded by his family on Monday June 21st, 2021 after a long illness. Brooks was born on October 8th, 1960 in Fort Worth, Texas to the late Sally Baker Porter and the late Dr. Philip James Porter. He attended The Dexter School, Brookline, MA; St. George's School, Middletown, RI; and graduated from the University of Vermont in 1983. Brooks co-owned Street & Company, a Boston-based residential and property management firm, and spent years walking down Charles Street, greeting almost every shop owner and resident on Beacon Hill along his route.  Brooks was a gentle gentleman. He was a valued and respected member of The Country Club in Brookline, the Somerset Club in Boston, and The Misquamicut Club and The Watch Hill Yacht Club in Watch Hill, Rhode Island where he spent his summers. There he enjoyed time on his boat, swimming in the cold ocean, and strolling with his loyal yellow lab, George. He loved skiing, yoga, biking, the coast of Maine and cheering on his children's sports teams. Brooks was intellectually curious, and enthusiastic about movies, words, and reading anything and everything he could find on World War II and Winston Churchill. Most of all, Brooks loved spending time with his family, and his huge group of devoted and wonderful friends. Brooks is the beloved husband of Katie (O'Reilly) Porter, and the adored father of their three children, Anna, Toby, and Lulu. Brooks is also survived by his sister Cynnie Ogden, her husband Tom, and several nieces and nephews. Brooks was predeceased by his brother, Philip K. Porter. The family would like to thank Avita of Needham and all of Brooks' wonderful caregivers for their love and kindness. A memorial service will be held in the fall. In lieu of flowers, contributions to Alzheimer's Association would be most gratefully received.

I knew Brooks in high school. He was friendly and kind and quick to make you laugh. I can easily imagine him befriending store owners on charles street.

We Peabody´s (Andrea, Cotty, & Biz) were deeply saddened to learn of Brooksie´s passing. Although we haven´t been together in many years, we spent wonderful times together when our children were little. We always treasured Brooksie´s warm and and quiet presence whenever we hung out, adding a peaceful calm to an otherwise rambunctious outing. He cared deeply about his family, always setting an example of unconditional love, and we were lucky to know him and call him friend. We send heartfelt prayers and love to his wonderful family, Katie, Anna, Toby and Lulu.

"A gentle gentleman." What an apt description. I can't say it better myself. Brooks was a much-loved high school classmate. I will miss him. I am consoled learning of the full life he created and lived, and the knowledge that he was surrounded by loving family and caretakers at the end. Farewell dear friend!

What a wonderful man. Porters were our neighbors for many years and our kids grew up together. So many memories of vacations together up in Maine. We shall totally miss Brooksie. XXOO
