JAMES EVANS Obituary

EVANS, James R. Age 88, of Winthrop, MA, passed away on September 28, 2025. A lifelong resident, Jim was a respected educator, coach, and athletic director, whose career spanned over 30 years. He graduated from Winthrop High (1955), served in the U.S. Army (1957–59), and earned degrees from Springfield College and Salem State. Jim joined Winthrop's physical education staff in 1961, coached baseball to multiple conference titles, and served as Athletic Director from 1972–1994. He was named Massachusetts Athletic Director of the Year in 1987 and was a strong advocate for Title IX, helping expand opportunities for female athletes. He is survived by his children, Lisa Federico (Anthony) and James K. Evans (Jill); grandchildren, James R. Evans (Holly), Jessica Rich (Carmen), Ashley Cerbone (Michael), Anthony Federico, Grant and Carter Evans; and great-grandchildren, Calvin Rich, Gianna and Joseph Cerbone. He was predeceased by granddaughter, Julia Evans. Additionally he was predeceased by longtime partner, Carol Kane; and former spouse, Marie Evans. Private family Services will be held. Donations may be made to the Jimmy Fund, at www.jimmyfund.org Winthrop High School will honor his legacy by naming its baseball field the James Evans Baseball Diamond.
