James Murray Obituary

69, Of Chevy Chase, MD, formerly of Marblehead, Wayland, and River Vale, NJ, Publishing Executive and Advocate for education, died May 8th after a lengthy illness. Harvard University, Class of 1955 and an Officer in the Marine Corps. The Marine Corps remained an important facet of his life, and he later served as a Member of the Board of Trustees of the Marine Military Academy. His lengthy career in educational publishing included 23 years with Prentice-Hall, Inc., the last 13 as President of Winthrop Publishing in Harvard Sq., a Prentice-Hall subsidiary. In 1990, he joined the American Council on Education in Washington, DC. He retired in 2002 as Vice President, although he remained a tireless advocate for quality education with a particular focus on equal opportunities for all. Jim was an avid sportsman and a lifelong Red Sox fan, member of the Harvard Club and the Harvard Varsity Club. Former husband of the late Alma (Tetrault), he leaves his wife of 20 years Judith (McManus) Murray; a daughter Laura Dunsworth of Nova Scotia, Canada: three sons, James of Falmouth, Paul of Lexington and Douglas of Belchertown: two sisters Nancy Waters of Frederick, MD and Joan Murray of Waltham; and seven grandchildren. A Memorial Mass will be at 1:30 PM Friday at the Holy Redeemer Church, Chevy Chase, MD and at 11 AM on May 26th at the Church of the Messiah, Woods Hole. Donations may be made to The Jim Murray Minority Scholarship Fund of the Devos Sport Business Management Graduate Program of the University of Central FL, sent to University of Central FL, c/o Richard Lapchick, College of Business Administration, PO Box 161400, Orlando, FL 32816.
