JANE ALEXANDER

ALEXANDER, Jane Age 66, died suddenly at Lowell General Hospital on July 26, 2022. Born and raised in Brookings, SD, she attended Mt. Holyoke College, graduated in 1980 and settled in Jamaica Plain. She married Mark Johnson in 2004, who passed in 2018. In 1982, she co-founded a daytime shelter for women, The Women's Lunch Place. Jane served as Executive Director for the next 20 years. She instituted a philosophy of dignity and community towards unhoused women. Jane's drive and vision inspired and changed the lives of hundreds of people who spent time in the Women's Lunch Place's bustling kitchen and welcoming dining room over the years. She was active in the Coalition for the Homeless, and received many awards for her work. Jane later became an executive director at Churches United in Moorhead, MN, developing permanent housing for families and expanding program functioning. In the last six years, Jane provided care for older individuals in Cambridge, Acton, and Bedford, enhancing their lives greatly while living in Dracut with her sister, Sarah.
