JANE CASTIGLIONI Obituary

CASTIGLIONI, Jane Maria (Albano) Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Jane Maria Albano was the daughter of Civitina and Salvatore Albano. She grew up in Somerville before moving to Arlington. After graduating from Arlington High School, she completed a bachelor's degree in elementary education from Boston College in 1970, followed by a master's in education from Boston State College. Jane's passion for education and being a lifelong learner led her to return to BC for a second master's degree in counseling psychology, more than thirty years later. Jane cherished her career in education, especially the decade she spent teaching second grade at Saint Agnes School, and later serving on the Saint Agnes School Board. Jane was a longtime volunteer at Massachusetts General Hospital after her husband was treated there for a brain injury. Jane loved dogs, especially golden retrievers, hospital therapy dogs, and Canine Ambassador Cori Copley. She loved walking in World's End, the habitat in Belmont, rowing and sailing on the Charles River, and hiking in New Hampshire. Jane also enjoyed watching Jeopardy every night, going to concerts, Shakespeare on the Common, listening to classical music, Magic 106.7, and old time radio on WAMU's The Big Broadcast. She also loved art in all forms, especially public art such as the Hatchlings on the Rose Kennedy Greenway. Jane also loved JP Licks ice cream, lobster rolls from James Hook, hotdogs at Sullivan's, the Pilgrim sandwich at Mike's City Diner, and the jelly donuts at Market Basket. Jane was especially proud of being featured on WBZ TV's Question Everything segment, in June, 2023, with David Wade, regarding the dirty conditions of the I-93 tunnels in downtown Boston. Jane is survived by David, her husband of 53 years; her three sons, Andrew (Judy) in Chicago, IL, Adam in Boston, Jeffrey (Myanne) in Belmont; and her brother, John (Brenda) in Winchester, CA. She is also survived by one grandson, Matthew of Chicago; and four nieces and nephews; along with many cousins. Jane's family wishes to acknowledge the entire team of doctors, nurses, nurses aides, social workers and other staff at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center who cared for her during her many stays there. We especially thank the BIDMC Brain Tumor Center, including Dr. Erik Uhlmann, Dr. Lauren Hertan, Dr. Rafael Vega, Dr. Grace Ho, Nurse Navigator Joanne Maccone, NP Annie Nolan, and NP Julianne Bloom. Using their extensive skills, they treated Jane with precision and compassion. We are deeply grateful to them. Thank you also to the team on the seventh floor of Spaulding Rehab in Charlestown who cared for Jane during her several stays there. Jane's family wishes to acknowledge the doctors, nurse practitioners, nurses, CNAs, chaplains, music, art, and other therapists and staff at Hebrew Rehabilitation Center in Roslindale (RSU and Berenson 4 West). They cared for Jane lovingly with a high degree of medical skill and their warm care provided Jane and her loved ones with comfort. We fervently thank them. In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations be made to The Glioblastoma Foundation, the Para & Adaptive Rowing program at Community Rowing Inc. or the Universal Access Program at Community Boating Inc. Relatives and friends are invited to visit and pay respects on Wednesday, July 23, from 4:00pm - 7:00pm, in the DeVito Funeral Home, 1145 Mass Ave., ARLINGTON. Funeral from DeVito's on Thursday, July 24, at 9:00am, with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at Saint Agnes Church, 30 Chestnut Street, Arlington, MA, at 10:00am. Interment to follow at Mount Auburn Cemetery.
