JANE SARGENT Obituary

SARGENT, Jane Louise Oman Died peacefully on March 17, 2023, at Kendal at Hanover. She was a long-time resident of Norwich, Vermont, and Wellesley, Massachusetts. She was 100 years old. Jane was born in Minneapolis, MN, on August 30, 1922. At age 13, her family moved to Hastings-on-Hudson, NY. It was there Jane met her future husband, David Sargent. A graduate of Hastings-on-Hudson High School (1939) and Smith College (1943), Jane married David on June 6, 1942. They had their first child, Karen, in 1944. In 1945, Jane and David moved to Wellesley MA. Five more children came along, spanning 16 years. Her life was busy with committed civic involvement. Jane worked for the Wellesley Scholarship Foundation and the Housing Authority and hosted students from Boston who participated in METCO. She served on many committees and boards for her children's schools and the town of Wellesley and was active in the Unitarian Church. Jane was also an enthusiastic alumna of Smith College. Jane took continuing education classes at Radcliffe College and later at Dartmouth College. She enjoyed the Boston Symphony and Museum of Fine Arts, driving from Vermont to Boston regularly into her 90s. Jane was a longtime member of the Wellesley Garden Club, the Hanover Garden Club, as well as the Norwich Women's Club. Jane and David had an abiding passion for Vermont and in 1960, built a small vacation cabin in Norwich, where many Sargents had lived before them. In 1992, with the fifth addition complete, Jane and Dave left Wellesley and retired to "Chuckleberry." Jane was an accomplished gardener, tennis player, baker, curious reader and traveler, loyal friend, loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her home was an important gathering spot for her children and grandchildren. Jane was predeceased by her husband, David, in 2000. She leaves her daughters, Karen (Joel) Sirkin of Wayland, MA, Anne Walker of Newton, MA; sons, Dwight Sargent (Hai) of Norwich, VT, Carl Sargent of Boston, MA, David Sargent (Ann) of Norwich, VT, and Thomas Sargent (Allison) of Wellesley, MA; ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. The Sargent family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the staff at Kendal at Hanover for their thoughtful care. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date. In lieu of gifts or flowers, please consider a donation to the Upper Valley Land Trust or a conservation organization of your choice.

I knew Jane well as a member of the Norwich Women´s Club. When we moved to Norwich twenty six years ago, it was women like Jane who made me feel welcome with a warm smile and welcoming attitude. She was clearly invested in her community. Jane was a person I always enjoyed running into at Dan & Whit´s and I was always grateful for her inclusive attitude. All of us at the Norwich Women´s Club are saddened to learn of her passing, but are grateful we had a part in those 100 fine years.
