JEFFREY SAUNDERS Obituary

SAUNDERS, Jeffrey Glenn Boston Hotel Owner & Operator For more than four decades, Jeffrey Saunders was President, CEO and co-owner of his family's hotel business, Saunders Hotel Group, a third-generation hotel management business based in Boston. A 1979 graduate of the Cornell University School of Hotel Management, he began his career with positions at the Ritz-Carlton Boston and Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City before joining the family business. He was the consummate hotelier, revered by his team and instrumental in building the group into Boston's premier independent hotel management company. Mr. Saunders' talents touched all areas of planning and operations for the hotels and his compassion and caring nature touched all those with whom he interacted. Under the original leadership of Jeffrey's grandfather, Irving and then his father, Roger, and for the last 40 years as partner with his brother Gary, the Saunders organization became known for its unique culture as well as the acquisition, turnaround, and longterm, hands-on management of hotels in Boston. Earlier in his career, before becoming CEO, Jeffrey held the position of General Manager and Managing Director at the family-owned hotels including the Boston Park Plaza Hotel & Towers, the Copley Square and Lenox Hotels. He helped redevelop what is now the Loews Boston, a luxury boutique hotel in the former Boston Police Headquarters building on Boston's Berkeley Street which opened in 2004, as well as the ground-up development of the first new airport hotel that had been built in 20 years, the award-winning Comfort Inn & Suites Logan Airport, which opened in 2000. In addition, Mr. Saunders was involved in several other hotel deals and hospitality real estate funds over the years, including, most recently, the Raffles Boston Hotel and Residences, the first of its kind in North America, which is now under construction and slated to open in 2022. Jeff actively participated in many hospitality, civic and philanthropic activities. He was a longtime supporter and board member of Combined Jewish Philanthropies, The Friends of the Boston Park Rangers Mounted Unit and numerous other charitable organizations. He was Past President of the Massachusetts Lodging Association and served as President of the New England Chapter of the Cornell Society of Hotelmen. He was a board member of the Greater Boston Convention & Visitors Bureau. He acted as a delegate at the White House Conference on Travel and Tourism and sat on the Board of Advisors of the Boston University School of Hospitality Administration, aiding in the inception of that program. He also served on the Board of the Elizabeth Bishop Wine Resource Center at Boston University, and was the Founder and Past Chair of the New England Hotel Lodging Roundtable. Jeffrey was an avid and accomplished poker player, having been a student of the game and appearing several times on ESPN at the World Series of Poker. He is one of a select few in history to advance into the deep rounds of the World Series in consecutive years. In addition to his many professional accomplishments and his love of playing poker, he was an avid Boston sports fan, and relished in watching his favorite New England sports teams, as well as playing tennis, skiing, golfing and walking to work. Most importantly, he relished the time spent with Debra, his devoted wife of 39 years, whom he traveled the world with on many adventures. Jeffrey and Debra built a strong and everlasting community at their winter abode in Boca Raton, FL. His love and support were unwavering for his children, Stephanie and Alexander and his fiancée, Anni Witt. Not sure what to say?

I'm saddened to hear about the passing of Jeff Saunders three years ago. I met him when my media business was on Boylston street in the 1980's. At that time I was producing newsletters, radio and TV ads. Jeff was kind, upbeat, and gave this young writer/producer plenty of direction and encouragement. Condolences to his family, and may he rest in Peace.

Dear Mr. Roger Saunders and family,

I was deeply saddened to hear about Jeffrey's passing. May your faith, family and friends bring you added comfort at this difficult time. I noticed right away from the photo, that Jeffrey looked so much like you when you were younger. He most of been so proud of that distinction.

You and your family were such kind and wonderful people. And as remarkable a hotelier as you were, Gary, Jeffrey, Tedd and Todd, obviously paid rapt attention to what you taught them, as they followed in your footsteps, to become great men in their own right. A seamless transition.

I had the honor to start working for your family in 1980, at the newly crowned Boston Park Plaza Hotel, as you just recently rescued a Boston landmark in the Statler Hilton. And for the next 14 years that I was there, you and your sons made all the employees feel like members of your family. And then in kind, we easily made the guests feel the same way. Although I didn't know Jeffrey that well personally, but it was easy to pick up on your family's style, vision and accomplishments. I worked for many different owners and bosses in my career, but no one like you.You were such a good, humble and successful man. It was an honor to work for you and your family. It rarely felt like work to me, as we enjoyed what we did, and in pleasing you. I took such pride when we were the first hotel in the city to sell out that night, or when we ran a long streak on consecutive sell out nights. Hey, Jeffrey wasn't the only one who was a competitive sports fan :->

So although I don't have as much to say individually about Jeffrey, you were all a family to me. Loving, interchangable parts. To compliment or pay tribute to any one of you, is the same in doing that for all of you.

And I'm sure that you, Jeffrey, Gary Tedd and Todd wouldn't want it any other way.

Proverbs 4:1 "Listen, my sons, to a father's instruction; pay attention and gain understanding."

Warm Regards.

I am sorry that Jeff is no longer with us. From early days at Cornell, where he taught me what an audiophile was, to later days in Boston, he was always a great person to know and call friend.

I am saddened today to read of Jeffrey's passing. For 4 decades the Saunders have served as a beacon in my hospitality career. I could always count on inspiration when following their efforts involving service, staff training/retention, design, development, community leadership, and of course charitable contributions.
I am humbled by the friendship and courtesy demonstrated towards me by the Saunders family and am especially thoughtful of Jeffrey and his immediate family today.
