JENNA SWAIM Obituary

SWAIM, Jenna Hoge Age 43, of Concord, Massachusetts, died peacefully at home on July 3, 2018, after a four-year battle with ovarian cancer. Born in Anchorage, Alaska, to Andrew and Carol Hoge, Jenna grew up enjoying the majestic views and pristine landscapes of Alaska. She graduated from Robert Service High School in 1992 and earned a bachelor's degree in American Studies from Yale University in 1996, where she played varsity soccer, earned multiple league honors, and served as the team captain her senior year. Upon graduation, she worked in investment banking at Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley and received a Master of Business Administration from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College in 2001. She transitioned from finance to human resources and worked at OneBeacon Insurance and PeopleFluent, all while raising her young family. Jenna thrived in and loved her career. Jenna met the love of her life, Derek Swaim, the first weekend at graduate school. They shared passions for sports, the outdoors, and traveling and settled in Concord, Massachusetts. She cherished nothing more than Derek and their three beautiful children, Luke, Jason, and Nora, and she put all of her incredible spirit, talent, and energy into her family. They brought smiles and laughter to her heart every day. Jenna was active in her community and tirelessly supported her children's schools, clubs, and abundant activities, always cheering for, and often coaching, them and their teams. With her family, she enjoyed hiking, biking, running, golfing, skiing, and the outdoors, and together they traveled extensively. Her extended family and friends were also very important to her. Jenna possessed a gift for forming lasting friendships wherever she went. She loved getting family and friends together. She was tremendously thankful for all the support that her sister, family, friends, neighbors, and children's teachers provided to her family and her. Her positive and kind attitude was infectious. She will be remembered by the many lives she touched for her bright smile, humility, thoughtfulness, strength of character, and dedication to every endeavor. Jenna loved life, cherished it, and lived it to the fullest. She was extremely grateful and felt lucky to have had such a full life in a short period of time. Jenna's wish is that through advances in early detection and research, ovarian cancer can be detected and treated more effectively. During her cancer fight, she never lost her optimism and courage to keep battling and searching for effective therapies. Jenna is survived by her husband, Derek and their three children, Luke, Jason, and Nora; mother, Carol Hoge of Anchorage, Alaska; father-in-law, Tom and Betsy Swaim of Concord, Massachusetts; sister, Anne Hoge Milliken and family of Los Altos, California; brother, Kevin Hoge and family of Anchorage, Alaska; and numerous other cherished family members, including her sisters- and brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins. She was predeceased by her father, Andrew Hoge and mother-in-law, Jeanie Swaim. Jenna and I went to high school together - she was a year older, but I admired her so much. She was such an inspiration and I looked up to her in so many ways. One of my most vivid memories is when she was in 8th grade and dressed up as a hoagie (Hoge) sandwich for Halloween. She was always just herself and despite her incredible and enviable talents and gifts, was the most humble person. She left her mark on this world in such an amazing way and I will remember her fondly.

This is tragic; I am so very sorry for this terrible loss for Derek and all the children, as well as the extended family. Jenna was a beautiful person and leaves only wonderful memories of her personhood. I very much regret that I will be out of town and cannot be present at the Celebration of Life; there is much to celebrate re: who she was and the loveliness she implanted in her children.

Lovely, always smiling Jenna! She was one of the first soccer players I ever met, and was on the Alaska Goldstrikers team Mike and I took to Regionals in Albuquerque on our honeymoon. Derek- I just read about your wife in the Globe & I am so sorry to hear of her illness & passing. I didn't realize you had married someone who I had played soccer against in college. She seems like a very special woman.
I am thinking of you & your family. I have suffered several significant losses since our graduation from Harvard so I know how painful the experience is. I am not too far from you in Wilmington so I hope our paths cross at some point.
