We were good friend s growing up in Dor c hester

Joel Shifman, Joe was a great friend, a great husband, a great father, a great grandfather. He was a great man. I had been blessed with knowing Joe for the last 32 years, when Elisha and I started dating.
Joe met Sue some 45 years ago after Narla set them up on a date. He was in love from the first minute he laid eyes upon her. Joe and Sue were in love and still are in love. There is nothing he would not do for Susan. He loved her with all his heart, every day of his life.
Joel was a great provider. He worked his way up in his field and always worked multiple jobs. Whatever it took, whatever was needed. He always took care of his family. Now when it came to business, this was a different story. He had his Vertical business that worked out for quite a while. This is where Joe's personality didn't help him. He would go on sales calls, and his customer's would tell them what bill surprised them, or the hard times they hit, who was out of work, so by days end, the sale would only cost Joe $50 per deal. That is when Sue said, I'm going on the next sales call!
Joe always had a projects going on. Closing in a room, finishing a basement and his mastery at the art of stucco. His projects could be outside in his yard, in or under his house, or his children's homes, there was always something to do.
There are 2 things my children wanted me to share with you about their Papa. The first was his love for pepper. Joe never met a peppercorn he didn't like. I am not aware of anything Joe did not like pepper on. I would not be surprised if someone told me he tried it on ice cream. The second thing my boys knew about Papa, was that whatever you do, whatever you talk about, don't ask Papa about politics, unless you had plenty of time so Papa could tell you what the politicians were doing wrong.
Joe was one of the nicest people I have ever known in my life. There is a word in the Yiddish dictionary that describes Joe. The word is Mensch. Its meaning is as follows; a person of integrity and honor." A "mensch" is "someone to admire and emulate, someone of noble character. The term is used as a high compliment, expressing the rarity and value of that individual's qualities. A person with the qualities one would hope for in a friend, a colleague or loved one. Joe was a mensch.
I am thankful and lucky to have known Joe. He was one of the good guys. I love you and will miss you. Thank you Joe.

You can measure a person from statements by people who knew and loved Joel a long time ago and just recently. I see a consistency of love and admiration from long ago and now. I knew Joel way back when he dated and married my cousin Susan. He is the same person. Warm, humorous, ready to give the shirt off his back, kind, and loving. All said describes Joel. One word I saw was Mench - the perfect word to describe Joel. I am shocked how a vibrant and loving man passes away in an instant. I give my love and wishes to my cousin Susan, her daughter Elisha, and her son Michael.

Since I always thought JOEL would be here with us for many years, I cannot convey the shock to find out about his sudden passing...Its such a paralyzing feeling that one cannot describe...
I met him when I was very young. He married my cousin. so, to me, he was my cousin as well!
He was adored by everyone in the family. We instantly knew what a kind, thoughtful, sincere, happy man he was....always making us feel at home; always smiling and joking .
I loved it when I visited during holidays because, although JOEL had moonlighting work, he would take breaks just to be with us: laugh with us, and even sit with us during card games just to give his presence...a true family man
I wish I could remember all the people he helped save during catastrophes; not just us family members but friends, friends of friends, neighbors, co-workers, acquaintances, even customers...his son-in-law John said it perfectly : JOEL was a mench!
My sympathy is for his loving family: it pains me with the knowledge of their sadness.....their loss of a man that truly loved them
