JOEL WEINSTOCK Obituary

WEINSTOCK, Joel V., MD Dr. Joel Vincent Weinstock passed away on Saturday, May 7, 2022. Born on March 21, 1948 in Detroit, Michigan to middle-class parents Esther and Herman Weinstock, Dr. Weinstock worked for greater than 50 years at Wayne State University, The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, and Tufts Medical Center in Boston where he was a devoted physician leader, researcher, educator, and fierce advocate for his patients and their families. An international pioneer in the study and treatment of inflammatory conditions of the digestive system, Dr. Weinstock coined the term "hygiene hypothesis" – the theory that raising children in extremely hygienic environments has an adverse impact on immune development, predisposing them to inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and other immunological disorders later in life. Dr. Weinstock is world-renowned for his innovative and extensive research on helminths – small, parasitic worms, once more common in the intestinal tract, that have shown to be protective against IBD. As devoted as Dr. Weinstock was to fathering breakthroughs in his field of study, Joel was an equally devoted and successful husband and father to his family. Dr. Weinstock is survived by his wife of 40 years, Alison, and their adult children Lisa, Jeff, and Andrew, who all reside in the Boston area. Funeral Services will take place on Wednesday, May 11, 2022 at 11:30am at Beit Olam East 44 Concord Rd., Wayland, MA 01778. www.brezniakfd.com

I am so saddened to find out that Dr. Weinstock passed away. I was selfishly looking him up because I missed him. He was a caring and compassionate doctor who not only took care of my physical ailments but also concerned himself with my overall well-being. I´m currently going through a GI issue and I said to my family: "I miss Dr. Weinstock. He would know what to do."
Dr. Weinstock was such a brilliant GI physician but was very unassuming. He was a kind and gentle soul. He made me feel at ease during difficult times.

I missed him before he passed away and miss him more now. Dr. Weinstock was one in a million. They don´t make humans like him anymore.
Rest easy Doc

Dr. Weinstock provided care and guidance at a critical juncture in my harrowing GI journey. He was patient, kind and conveyed a Zen-like calm that was so soothing. His commitment to patient self-advocacy was empowering. It enabled me to see beyond my illness. He was an outstanding doctor, among the very best, and I remain forever grateful. Deepest condolences to his family and colleagues.

Dr Weinstock was the most caring, sincere, and attentive doctor I have ever had. He treated patients as humans, and always said "you´re the client". I came to him in a difficult time and he held my hand through the entire process. My family will always remember and appreciate him.

I just received the news of Dr. Weinstock's passing. I am beyond devastated. He was my beloved and caring GI who was compassionate, caring, and my partner in navigating my Crohn's Disease for the past ten years. After hitting the walls with GI's at Mass General Hospital and Brigham & Women's, I hired him on the spot when he indicated that I was the boss, he worked for me, and he had options for me. We ended each and every visit with a huge bear hug. I just could never address him as Joel though despite his okay to do so.

My deepest sympathies to all who knew and loved him.

May Dr. Weinstock's memory forever be a blessing.

I am very sad to hear that Doctor Weinstock had passed . I was a patient of his and he was excellent and always made me feel comfortable about calling him . I remember telling be him I felt
uncomfortable with calling him about little issues and he would yell at me and say that's why I am here. He would then call every couple of weeks to check in on me. He made me feel comfortable about anything that I had to ask him. He will be missed

Dr. Weinstock diagnosed my son's condition when he was in college in Boston about 8 years ago. His kind and gentle demeanor was like no other doctor I've known. He always took the time to answer my son's many questions. He gave us both his cell phone and told us to call any time. He knew that I lived in NY and told me not to worry - he would be my stand-in parent in Boston. My son moved back to NY after graduation but has gone back to Boston for his annual appointments with Dr. Weinstock, because you don't leave a doctor like Joel Weinstock. We are so deeply sorry that he has left us. Our condolences to his family and to the Tufts Medical community. He will be missed by so many.

Our deepest condolences to the Weinstock Family on the passing of Dr. Weinstock.

Dr. Weinstock was my wife's and son's doctor for nearly ten years. When my son was very ill, Dr. Weinstock met with my family for over two hours during one of the biggest blizzards of the year. One year later, my son was in remission thanks to Dr. Weinstock. And not long after that, Dr. Weinstock helped my wife achieve remission as well. We often referred other family members and friends to Dr. Weinstock because of the unmatched care we knew he would provide.

Dr. Weinstock was a truly kind and genuine person who will be forever missed. May God comfort your family as only He can.

I am very sorry to hear that this wonderful man has passed. He has been my doctor for many years keeping my Crohn´s in check after surgery. I will miss him greatly. I will miss his compassion, wit and smile. He was always upbeat and encouraging even as he was dealing with his own health problems. He would call periodically to check on me in between appointments and gave me his number to call anytime if I needed him. He was not only my doctor he was a friend.
Heartfelt condolences to all family, friends and patients.

My deepest sympathy to the family.
Dr. Weinstock took care of my tummy troubles for many years. Due to Covid In had been meeting with him on video phone. The last time we spoke was in Feb. and at the end of our conversation he said remember you can call me any time if you have a problem. Remember I'm not only your doctor, I'm also your friend. Then he smiled that big beautiful smile that would make his eyes sparkle. He was a very special man and his smile is forever etched in my mind.

Dr Weinstock a remarkable doctor at Tufts Medical Center passed away over the weekend. Without him I would of died with crohns and colitis. He even inspired me to pursue medicine and gastroenterology as a career. He led the pathway for it. Please send prayers. He TRULY felt like a family member to me. When I was in a flare up he turned his car around before leaving to Cork Ireland just to see me before he left on his flight. He literally cared a lot about me and made sure to help keep me in shape. I´m extremely shocked by this. Yehi zichra baruch!

Dr. Weinstock has been my doctor for many many years. I have never met a more compassionate man, sometimes calling me on a Saturday night or holiday to check on me. He understood me both medically and mentally and, for that I will always be thankful.

Besides his wealth of knowlegde, I will miss his upbeat and optimistic attitude. He always made me smile.
