JOHN ANDERSON Obituary

ANDERSON, John "Jack" L. Maverick Funeral Director Jack Anderson, one of the funeral industry's more controversial figures, died November 7th at his home in Stoneham. He was 80. Jack was widely known for promoting alternative and affordable funeral services. His advocacy for a dignified farewell without the high-priced pomp made him a maverick amongst peers. A frequent speaker at colleges and civic groups, Jack worked closely with the Funeral Consumers Alliance of Eastern Massachusetts (known previously as the Memorial Society). His life revolved around educating and serving others during a most vulnerable time. His children describe him as a free thinker, a contrarian, a rebel at times who questioned authority. Jack was a man of few words, firm beliefs, and quiet strength. He believed in the dignity of all people. He rooted for the underdog, stray dogs, stray people, lost souls and those down on their luck. He gave people second (and third) chances, and often did business on a handshake. An only child, Jack was born in Brooklyn, NY, to Dr. John Clifford Anderson and Dorothy (Mahaney) Anderson. A resident of Stoneham most of his life, he was raised on Warren Street, and graduated in 1961 from Stoneham High School. Jack attended the University of Bridgeport, where he met his wife, Trudance (Borstel) Anderson, at freshman orientation. He went on to earn his funeral directors license from the New England Institute at Kenmore Square. For 55 years, Jack worked as a funeral director at Goodrich Funeral Home in Lynn, Long Funeral Home in Cambridge, and John Bryant and Sons Funeral Home in Stoneham. He would later acquire two of these homes, and proudly serve those communities until his own death. His wife Trudy was his true North. Together, they logged thousands of nautical miles sailing the New England coast. He was happiest exploring the Maine coastline and islands with his family. Jack was a longtime member of the Boston Yacht Club in Marblehead and the Boothbay Yacht Club in Maine. He was a past president of the Stoneham Rotary Club and served on the board of the Stoneham Boys and Girls Club. In the 1970s, Jack served on Stoneham's Board of Health. In that capacity, he organized a town-wide clean-up, enlisting National Guard manpower; and was instrumental in banning aerial mosquito spraying in Stoneham. In addition to his wife of 60 years, Jack is survived by his daughter, Heather Anderson and her husband Louis Silvestro; his daughter, Hillary (Anderson) Smallcomb and her husband James; his son, John "Jake" Anderson; and five grandchildren: Owen and Emma Smallcomb, and Marley, Nicholas, and Aurora Silvestro. He will be buried in the presence of family at Cedar Brook Burial Ground in Limington, Maine. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Jack's memory to Building Bridges Through Music (www.bbtmusic.org) or The Boys and Girls Clubs of Stoneham & Wakefield (www.bgcstoneham.org). Visiting Hours: Visiting Hours will be held at Anderson-Bryant Funeral Home on November 17th from 4-8PM. A Memorial Service will take place the following day, November 18th, at St. Patrick Parish at 1PM. andersonbryantfuneralhome.com

John was the embodiment in how to treat people in this business. I learned from him just by watching him interact with not only families he was serving but with his staff and his colleagues. John was kind and he was caring. He was a comfort to just be around and I can see his smile now as I am thinking about him. I am saddened to have heard of his passing this morning. Jake, I am so sorry to you and to your mom and your entire family on the loss of your dad.

Our deepest and most sincere condolences. John and Trudy touched our lives in so many ways. They were instrumental in the successful careers of many, who had the privilege of working for them. Tony and I thought of John as a father, that neither of us had. We were honored to have Trudy and John stand up for us at our wedding. He truly left a special place in our hearts and will never forget the words of wisdom and compassionate advice he shared, enriching our lives as we move forward, til our lives are no more. Rest In Peace our beloved friend.....Leon and Tony

Trudy and Family, I am very sorry to hear about Jack. He was a Rotary Club friend of my father's and a long-time customer at our store. He would frequently chat with Dad on the sales floor. Little did I know that they were both old sailors, probably entertaining one another through the years with "that can't be true" boat stories. John's Obituary is a testament to a life well-lived.

What a "Gentleman" was Jack Anderson! Always a pleasure to work with. Whenever he had services at Stoneham Memorial SDA Church, I knew everything would be done exactly as it should be, with Humble and Respectful Dignity.

Dear Trudy and family,
John will always be remembered as a first class gentleman who naturally possessed generosity and kindness at it's finest. John was the kind of man that God doesn't make anymore. He sponsored many people in the wonderful profession (Including myself), a mentor and a true friend. He was a funeral directors director and did this life thing right. Thank you for sharing him with us, we will forever be better people because of him. We are so sorry, our prayers are with you.

Mr. Anderson was a one of a kind. He had such a contagious laugh and welcoming smile. I have such fond memories talking to him on Christmas Eve. He made me feel like family but would never let me forget the time I hit the tree out in front of their house when I was 19. 30 plus years later, he still teased me about that every time I saw him.
“If Heaven weren’t so far away, I’d pack up the kids and drive there for the day”
Cheers to you Mr Anderson ❤

Everything in John's obituary is true, he did so much for so many people, not for glory but for the right reason. He was a truly good man. My father Arthur would not have worked with him if his values were not true. Our entire family shares your grief because he was always so good to us.

My deepest sympathies to the Anderson family - John dedicated his life to helping others through their time of need. He was from an era in funeral service in Massachusetts that yielded so many leading and kind funeral professionals - he being one. My dad always spoke highly of John.

May his memory always be eternal.
