McDONOUGH, Msgr. John P. Msgr. John P. McDonough, Maj Gen USAF (Ret) age 93, passed away on Nov. 17, 2021, at the Regina Cleri Residence for Retired Priests in Boston. In May of 1963, Fr. McDonough entered active military service, as an Air Force Chaplain beginning a 28-year career. In those early years, against the backdrop of the Vietnam War, Fr. John and his fellow Chaplains, spearheaded the Air Force effort to provide pastoral and material support for the thousands of families, of the servicemen deployed to South East Asia and throughout the globe. He continued to focus on the well-being of military families, in the course of completing challenging assignments both in the United States and overseas. In 1985, Fr. McDonough was promoted to Brigadier General when he became Deputy Chief of Chaplains. In December 1988, he was promoted to Major General as he became Chief of Chaplains, Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C. He was also responsible for establishing an effective total chaplain program that met the religious needs of all members of the Air Force. John was assigned to St. John's Church in Peabody, serving as Pastor for more than a decade. In 2002, following a sabbatical, he volunteered to be the Pastor at St. Agnes Roman Catholic Church in Middleton. Fr. John was named a Prelate of Honor by Pope John Paul and given the title "Reverend Monsignor"; he was then named a Protonotary Apostolic, the highest grade of monsignor outside of Rome. In 2003, he retired from parish life and served as the Interim Cabinet Secretary for Faith Formation & Evangelization, in the Archdiocese on the staff of Cardinal Seán P. O'Malley. In January of 2010, the Archdiocese of Boston announced the formation of the Office of Pastoral Support and Child Protection, a newly established department which Integrated the important pastoral ministries of Pastoral Support and Outreach, Child Advocacy, and Background Screening. It is with great sadness today that I learned of Father John´s passing. Such an accomplished spiritual man, always there for others. Fr. John was great comfort to my family when my dad, Coleman, was sick and at the time of his passing. My Mom and Dad always had a special place in their hearts for him. He will truly be missed. God Bless his beautiful soul.

Kathleen Lydon always Kay to Fr. John!

Today my heart is very heavy to learn of Fr. John,s passing, to my husband Coley and I his kindness and joyful humor was always present whenever we met him at the family funerals and I shall always remember him at out wedding and how he made our day so special, years after his humor always made a visit with him so special as his birthday and my daughter share the same day and I would always make sure I remembered him with a card and happy thoughts, no greater person deserves Heaven more than he and I will carry his memory in my heart forever, God speed Fr. John you were the best and your reward is waiting for you!!

We (Father John and yours truly) met circa 1997, rather late in life for the both of us when this rather old lost soul participated in the RCIA protocol. I truly was a lost soul at the time - not sure if I had chosen to become a Catholic for the wrong reason - i.e., to simply escape the immediate mental pain I was then suffering - or because I finally, late in life, truly wanted to channel my unorganized faith into Catholicism and the true faith provided by the Holy Catholic Church. Fr. John, before becoming Pastor of St. John's, served the faithful in the Armed Forces of the United States, and exited to his next calling as Pastor with the distinction of being a Major General in the United States Air Force and Chief of Chaplains! Fr. John almost always strolled into the room where the RCIA meetings were being held in the rectory, and he always pulled me to one side and walked me and talked me about what the Holy Catholic Church provided, and. "No", he was sure that my pursuit of Catholicism was not an escape mechanism. The RCIA program, together with my sessions with Fr. John during the RCIA period,, was all that yours truly could hope for and more! Prepared to receive and embrace the Sacraments of the Holy Catholic Church, to be sure. But more, a new dear friend and mentor and collaborator in Fr. John from 1998 to 2000, and, indeed beyond. I was so honored at the Easter Vigil 1998 have Fr. John as the Celebrant of my Baptism (even though, with an unforgettable smile, he was more than heavy handed with the Holy Water!). Having received my First Communion from Fr. John, I now had a new and beloved Holy Catholic Church in Saint John the Baptist Parish plus a new and lasting friendship with Fr. John throughout his Pastoral assignment at Saint John's and beyond.

A Nation salutes you, of course, for sharing your Love of God with the United States Armed Forces for so many years!

God Speed Fr. John

We shall miss you dearly!
