John Murdock Obituary

John Stetson Murdock, 87, of Buttonwood Lane, Darien, CT, a loving husband, father and grandfather passed Monday, March 9, 2009 at Miriam Hospital in Providence. He was the beloved husband of fifty-eight years to Mary Anne (Whitlock) Murdock.

Born in Leicester, MA on August 12, 1921, John was a son of the late Harold and Elizabeth (Stetson) Murdock. He was raised in Leicester and was a graduate of Milton Academy in Milton, MA. John later received a Bachelor of Arts at Princeton University, Class of 1944. During World War II, John honorably served in the U.S. Army.

John was employed as an investment counselor for a period of ten years at Baxter Bros. Inc. in Greenwich, CT. Earlier he was employed as an investment counselor for Schroeder Ness & Thomas in New York City for many years.

Mr. Murdock was a member of the Princeton Club of New York, an avid stamp philatelic and a member of the Ye Olde King’s Highway Stamp Club in Darien, CT. A resident of Darien the past fifty years, John had a passion for sailing and was a member of the American Yacht Club in Rye, NY. John was a devoted husband and father and in later years was blessed with ten grandchildren.

In addition to his beloved wife, Mary, John is survived by two sons: Jay Murdock and his wife Su of New Fairfield, CT and Rob Murdock and his wife Gail of Monrovia, CA; two daughters: Betsy Myers and her husband Chris of Norton and Missy Bauman and her husband David of Glastonbury, CT; ten grandchildren: Connor Myers, Chris Murdock, Justin Murdock, Greg Murdock Ben Murdock, Annie Murdock, Katie Bauman, Tim Bauman, Christy Bauman and Jamie Bauman; three nieces and a nephew.

John was the beloved brother of the late Marjorie Merritt.

Family and friends are kindly invited to attend a Celebration of John’s Life on Saturday, March 14, 2009 at 2 PM in St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 471 Mansfield Avenue, Darien, CT. In lieu of flowers and those wishing to remember John in a special way may make memorial contributions to: The Alzheimer's Association, 311 Arsenal Street, Watertown, MA 02472.
