JOHN PHILBROOK Obituary

PHILBROOK, John Benjamin 80, was cleared for takeoff on August 20th. The son of Everett C. and Adelaide (Cooper) he was born in Newton, MA on April 7, 1933. Johns aviation career spanned more than 40 years. As captain of the B47 he was part of the Strategic Air Command during the Cuban Missile Crisis. His 10 years in the Air Force were followed by almost 30 years with American Airlines where he was a member of the Grey Eagles. In retirement, he became Director of Operations at Beverly Airport flying charters. He especially enjoyed flying the Fouga. He was also excited to have another window of aviation open to him as he began to fly float planes on the many lakes in Maine. This skill was honed during 30 years of sailing the New England coast with his family aboard his Columbia 43 IsaLei. John was a graduate of Colby College and a member, as well as leader, of the Colby Eight. He was a member of the Philanthropic Lodge in Marblehead, Bektash Shriners, and Scottish Rite in Boston. He was a long-time member of the Boston Yacht Club and a past member of the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club. He leaves his wife of 40 years, Sylvia, their daughter Amy, her husband Andrew, and their three grandsons, Adyn, Cameron, and Landon. He also leaves his children Mark (Jeanne), John, Peter (Vickie), Patricia (Tom), and Kathryn (John), ten grandchildren, Ben, Blake, Katie, Tyler, Ryan, Sarah, Henry, Sophia, Kelsey, Jaime, and three great-grandchildren. There will be a Memorial Service at the Old North Church in Marblehead at 11:00am on Saturday, August 24. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his memory to the Shriners Hospitals for Children, Boston at http://www.shriners hospitalsforchildren.org. Dear Sylvia and family. John and I were "roomies" when we were first hired by American in January of 1965. We roomed together in a motel room for about 3 months and attended classes daily, so I got to know him rather well. He went to Boston and I went to Chicago, so our flying paths didn't cross too many times. I know he was a credit to the AAL pilot group. My sincere condolences.
