JONATHAN EVANS

1949 - 2022

EVANS, Jonathan On February 14, 2022, Jonathan P. Evans passed away peacefully at the age of 72. Jonathan, a duel citizen, was born in Birmingham, England and received his Metallurgy degree from Nottingham University. A chance to work on a pioneering research team at MIT brought him to the United States and it has been his home ever since. He had a passion for education and a knack for teaching others. He stayed in Cambridge, MA, and first taught mathematics, latin and coached soccer and track in Belmont, before moving on to Cambridge's Shady Hill School, for 25 years. Along with teaching in the classroom, he founded and operated a summer day camp for children 4-12 for 15 summers. Jonathan married his wife, Jo-An in 1998, after dating for 12 years. After they married, the two spit their time between Block Island, RI, and Aventura, FL. While in Florida, Jonathan involved himself in all aspects of life. For 13 years he was involved in the Williams Island Owners' Associations and 7000 Building, either as President, chairman or representative. He had a ready smile and enjoyed a good joke and therefore, was a "natural" as president of the 100-man comedy club known as "The Lunch Bunch of Aventura," for 17 years. More recently, Jonathan has been the Chairman of the Aventura Community Services Board, helped with political campaigns and was an Aventura City Commissioner, at the time of his death. Jonathan also involved himself at Florida International University, first as chair for the scholarship committee and later as the co-chair of the Vice Provost's Council. Anyone who knew Jonathan, knew he was a man passionate about many things. From politics to sports, he was willing to debate and defend what he believed was right. He had a love of movies, tennis, swimming but most of all family and friends. Jonathan leaves his wife of 24 years, Jo-An; daughter, Emily Akino; and grandson Ethan in the U.S.; as well as a brother, Simon; and a cousin, Jane Souter-Frost in England; and countless close friends on both continents. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Golden Gifts First Generation Scholarship at FIU.
