JONATHAN HABER Obituary

HABER, Jonathan R. On Sunday, May 8, 2022, Jonathan "Jon" Richard Haber of Lexington passed away at the age of 60. Jon was born on April 1, 1962 in Detroit, MI to Herbert and Barbara Haber. He grew up in Winchester, MA and received a BA in Chemistry from Wesleyan University in 1985. On August 9, 1997, he married Carolyn Goldstein, with whom he had two sons, Eli and Benjamin. They lived in Somerville until 2005, when the family moved to Lexington. Jon worked as a journalist, author, CEO, and most recently an educational consultant. He wrote several books, including MOOCs and Critical Thinking for the MIT Press, as well as The Usable Portable Guide, a manual to early word processing software which he co-authored with his father. This same family partnership, with the addition of Jon's brother Nicholas, led to the founding of SkillCheck, a company with over 35 employees over 15 years and was the first of Jon's several educational business ventures. Jon's later projects included Critical Voter and Degree of Freedom. He was also a founding employee of the Woodrow Wilson Graduate School of Teaching and Learning, and consulted with a number of educational companies and nonprofits such as HarvardX and the Public Consulting Group in the areas of course development, educational assessment, and online learning. Those lucky enough to know Jon recognized his dedication to his friends, sharp intelligence and wit, creative drive, and his active participation in the community. He was even more intensely dedicated to his family, and was a consistent source of support through all their endeavors. Jon especially loved to watch and discuss movies with his family and friends. An Eagle Scout and lover of the outdoors, he was an Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 119, of which his sons were members. Jon was also an active congregant at Temple Isaiah in Lexington, where he served on the Bereavement and Israel Action committees. Jon was preceded in death by his brother Matthew and his father Herbert. He is survived by his mother Barbara, his wife Carolyn, his brother Nicholas, and his sons Eli and Benjamin. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, May 12, 2022 at Temple Isaiah in Lexington at 11:00 AM. Shiva will be observed in Lexington on Thursday, May 12, 2022 5:00-8:00 PM, and in Winchester on Friday, May 13 1:00-4:00 PM and Sunday, May 15 1:00-4:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jon's name to Temple Isaiah, the Appalachian Mountain Club, the American Heart Association, or the organization of your choice. My brother Rob and I, along with good friends Susan Wheeler and David Warnock found out recently about Jon's passing. We were all Winchester High School Class of 1980 graduates and knew Jon well from spending three years worth of high school seasons running Cross-Country, Winter and Spring Track with him, and traveling in some of the same social high school circles. He was a very nice young man - good student, caring teammate, and exceptionally funny with his dry wit. What we remember most about him is his abilities to encourage team camaraderie and to never pull rank.

My friends and I had run into Jonathan over the years a few times at our Class Reunions, and it was always nice to see him - same John, clever and amusing, and down-to-earth, despite his sophistication and his many life accomplishments.

Our hearts go out to his family and friends during this time of loss, and we would like you to know that Jonathan is the kind of person that is remembered fondly by his WHS classmates. Such a fine young man.

We hold his family and friends in our prayers. Please know there are many out here who care about what you are going through.

We at CAMERA are stunned by this tragic loss. Jon was a friend and a participant in the work of defending truth about Israel for thirty years. He was a brilliant articulator of complex issues with a wry, gentle sense of humor. We benefited enormously from his talents and insights -- and only recently planned for many more collaborations. We are devastated by this loss and extend deepest condolences to Carolyn, Eli and Ben and to all his bereaved family. May his memory be an abiding blessing to all who knew and loved him.

I have many memories of meetings and helping with a number of projects. I truly loved Jon's critical thinking, his innovative ideas and creativity. It is very sad that he left us way too early. I'll will hold his memory in great esteem.

It was my privilege to work with Jonathan as an editor at The MIT Press. He was a wonderful author to work with -- knoweldgeable, meticulous, and exacting, but always conscious of translating his knowledge for the broadest possible audience of readers. And of course, a warm and wonderful human being.
I will miss Jonathan's wise counsel and generous friendship.

All deaths are sad, but this one is tragic - to be cut off in the prime of life. Jon may not have had many years, but the years he did have were well spent and amazingly productive. He will be sorely missed. He is a role model for his family and all of us and will never be forgotten.

Gone too soon. I will never forget his voice, his sense of humor, or how much he loved his family and regarded this world as a crazy place. Worse now without him.
