JOSEPH MCGRATH Obituary

McGRATH, Joseph T. "Joe" Joe attended Cathedral High School in Boston, graduating in 1961. Later in life, Joe continued his education and earned his Bachelor's degree from the University of Massachusetts in Boston. Joe worked full-time for 40 years as an operating room administrator at the Massachusetts General Hospital. Joe grew up in Dorchester, MA and lived his entire life in the Boston area. The simplest pleasures in life brought Joe great joy. He was an avid reader and especially loved reading the New York Times. He loved listening to opera and watching his daily news on PBS. Joe very much enjoyed spending time with family and friends and could always be found at the dessert table at family gatherings. Joe was our family historian whom we all relied on to recall a person in an old photo or an event that occurred in the family. Joe loved to travel and looked forward to meeting new people during his travels. Joe also loved a quiet evening at home with a good book and his cat Sauncy. A wonderful, sweet man who was loved by all that met him for his friendly and peaceful demeanor. Joe will be missed terribly. Joseph T. McGrath passed away peacefully in Boston, MA on January 17, 2021. Born on March 2, 1943 in Boston, MA, to the late Patrick McGrath and Sadie McLaughlin. He was predeceased by his brothers John McGrath, Robert McGrath and James McGrath; sisters Marie Ralston and Julia DeSimone; niece Kathleen Reid and nephew Timothy McGrath. Survivors include his brother Gerald McGrath, Sr., nieces, nephews, and dear friends. Our family would like to express our sincere gratitude to everyone at the Tufts Medical Center for all that you did to help Joe over the last several years. You are all an amazing team of professionals who we could not be more thankful for. We would also like to say thank you so much to all the team members and friends at Hawthorne Place for all your support and friendship over the years. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Salvation Army, Boston Prime Timers, Inc., Tufts Medical Center or an organization of your choice in honor of Joe. A celebration of Joe's life will be held in Boston, MA in the spring/summer of 2021. Funeral arrangements will be private.

I’m devastated by Joe’s loss as we were great friends for over 58 years. It now painfully feels like a part of me is missing. My profound condolences to his wonderful caregiver Neice Michelle and his brother Gerald Both Whom he loved deeply. His last difficult years would have been much harder without Michelle’s loving care and attention he told me more than once in the past months . And condolences to to his great neighbour and caregiving friend Tom P. Alas I’ve been denied being able to go down and visit him from Toronto since the pandemic struck but I talked with him regularly on the phone weekly for the past year (and visited with him regularly before Covid.) He was usually very upbeat and calm to talk with though suffering the cruel effects of kidney disease & gruelling dialysis for the past three years. Through thick & thin Joe was always a kind, intelligent, loving. sensitive, calm voice of reason in my life . I shall miss him a great deal. Some friendships are irreplaceable. RIP joe ! Goodbye my loving, lifelong friend.

A soothing, calm and friendly presence. He will be sorely missed by his many deeply neurotic friends. How did he put up with us?
