JOSEPH SWAYZE Obituary

SWAYZE, Joseph Couse A long-time teacher, traveler, and lover of the outdoors who inspired a generation of students to seek the truth in words and imagery, died on Monday, July 11, of congestive heart failure related to amyloidosis, a rare heart disease. A resident of Rockport, MA. He was 77.

A man of eclectic interests and infectious curiosity, Joe shared his wisdom through photography and journalism for 33 years at Noble and Greenough School in Dedham, MA. He taught students how to see the world more clearly, whether asking probing questions as student journalists or focusing lenses on people and nature for black-and-white photography, a particular passion of his.

In many cases, Joe's classroom had no walls. He led legendary trips for students that included a canoe trip down the Hudson river, as well as biking adventures in Vietnam and along the coast of California. And he always had his camera in hand, capturing portraits of life and nature.

His influence on student's career choice was profound. The three top editors on the 1977-78 staff of The Nobleman all became professional journalists, two at The Wall Street Journal and one at The New York Times. Over the years, Swayze disciples ended up at The Boston Globe, The Washington Post, National Geographic, and others.

Joe Swayze was born August 2, 1944, in Middletown, NY, not far from the Hamburg Mountains in New Jersey, where his family owned a rustic cabin overlooking a mountaintop lake. Joe credits his summers there with his early love of being on the water.

A 1966 graduate of Williams College, Joe spent a year in Vietnam as a U.S. Army information officer, writing news stories, making photographs, and escorting journalists in the field. Joe said that a day he spent with Larry Burrows, a legendary British combat photographer, inspired him to make photography a part of his life.

After working for the Bennington Banner and the Berkshire Eagle, he shifted gears, became a teacher and shared these passions for newspapering and photography with hundreds of Nobles students including and especially editors of The Nobleman. Joe also taught the Young Photographers class for many summers at the Maine Photographic Workshops.

Joe and Joanna, also a teacher in the Nobles art department, retired in 2006. In their final 15 years at Nobles, he and Joanna traveled to a dozen or so countries, including Russia and Easter Island, almost always with students in tow. Moving to Rockport from Dedham, Joe quickly made new friends, who, like his students, were drawn to his outgoing personality, quirky ways and his willingness to share his life and interests.

He stayed connected to family and his many friends through "snail mail" letters and photographs, delivered in brown kraft envelopes, which became something of a trademark. His postcards made from his photographs were works of art. So were his letters, tapped out on his manual Smith-Corona typewriter.

He is survived by his wife, Joanna Clark Swayze; their son, Andrew and his wife, Dr. Jean Andersson-Swayze of Charlotte, VT; and Accra, Ghana; their children, Caroline, Margo and Lincoln. Other survivors include his four siblings, Lynn Salyer of Sudbury, MA, Robert (Joan) of Los Angeles, CA, Richard (Kim) of Colfax, CA, and Anne (Robin) of Putney, VT.

A Memorial Service will be held at the First Congregational Church of Rockport on September 25, 2022, at 2 pm. For those inclined, please make donations in Joe's name to Williams College Alumni Fund, The Rockport Public Library, or plant a tree. Online condolences may be given at: www.greelyfuneralhome.com

t would be disingenuous to not wonder why so little of Joe´s youth is alluded to in this beautiful obituary . Joe spent 12 formative years with people who enjoyed and respected him, who played music and sports with him and who have missed him over these last decades. He grew up with us in Glen Ridge New Jersey 45 minutes outside of New York City. A sliver carved out between Montclair and Bloomfield it is 1 mile long and 1/2 wide. Population 7,000. It was and still is a beautiful town with perfect rose gardens and lawns. On a clear night we could see the lights of NYC. As we got older NYC became our backyard, a place to attend real theater, museums, and music. It was 1950´s. The war was over. Life was good. Many of our parents had chosen this hamlet because of its wonderful school system. Although all public we were rated next to the private schools. Many of our fathers rode the Erie/Lackawanna train to the city to work. There were very few moms who had careers. Doors were not locked at our homes. We knew our friends´ parents as they did us. Glen Ridge protected us from the real world perhaps until we realized our population wasn´t diverse or until Viet Nam and the horrors of the 60´s. I met Joe in the 1st grade. His family lived on Forest Ave where at least 10 of us walked to and back from grammar school together. High school meant riding bikes or catching a lift on the main street with someone´s parent. When I think of those 12 years that I knew Joe, his mother, and his sister Lynn the memories are vivid. ...In the car on the way to the Swayze camp, the bats, the outhouse. Mrs. Swayze´s sweet but persistent advice and Mr. Swayze´s larger than life presence. I can easily visualize all of it even if I can´t find my glasses today! . As I reflect on what each of us has done with our lives I am so glad that he realized all his great potential and brought his creativity to his students who will surely be his legacy. My most vivid memory of Joe is listening to him play guitar with two others (ala Kingston Trio) during our high school trip to Stratford-on-Avon in Connecticut. I took up guitar recently upon retirement wanting to be able to capture everyone's attention as Joe did during that spring day during our Senior year of high school. He appeared to be having so much fun.

My deepest sympathies to all of Joe's family on his passing. My history with Joe goes back to our early years in Glen Ridge, NJ, where we were classmates and neighbors on Forest Avenue. His accomplishments as a teacher, journalist and photographer are amazing and the many students who benefited from his expertise are his lasting legacy. May he rest in peace.

One of my favorite places is a small volcano crater lake in Hamburg, NJ owned by the Swayze clan: cabins, a kitchen, bunk beds, a boat dock for canoes, crystal clear cold lake water, fishing rods & lures and hand nets. My last visit there was in 1962.....Joe gave me permission to fish there by myself before I moved south. In the winter Joe, Sr would chop a hole in the thick ice for drinking water. The ice skating was fun too as the wind rarely ruined the ice. And that was the last time I talked with Joe........

Sorry to hear of Joe's death. I was a friend of his at Williams.
Now for the co-incidence which I did not know at the time. I am from Middletown, NY and was born on September 9th. We may have gone to the same nursery school or primary school. How long did Joe live in Middletown? Once again, sorry to hear of his passing.
