DR. JULIAN L. SEIFTER

Seifter, Dr. Julian L. Dr. Julian Seifter, international kidney expert and Distinguished Family Haidas and Julian L. Seifter Chair in Medicine at Brigham & Women's Hospital, died Friday October 24, 2025 after a long illness during which he remained active as a teacher of Harvard medical students and house staff, fellows, and junior faculty at the Brigham. Author of 150 scientific papers, monographs, case reports, and textbook chapters, both a scientist and a master clinician, he was widely admired and loved for his compassionate care of patients, his inspirational teaching, his charm, playfulness, warmth, and wit. A fisherman, sailor, naturalist, and avid collector of everything from baseball memorabilia to butterflies, Dr. Seifter had a gusto for life that he shared with his loved ones. He is survived by his wife, Betsy, who co-authored their book After the Diagnosis, a guide to dealing with chronic illness; his son, Andrew; his daughter-in-law Lori and granddaughter Ellie; and his sister Madeleine Seifter. He was predeceased by his beloved son Charlie and is also survived by his nieces and nephews and his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, who are forever grateful for the presence in their lives.
