Cohn Family
I was saddened to only learn today ( while planning my next cardiac surgery) that Dr Cohn had passed. He performed the very complex Ross Procedure on me in Feb 1997. He an I established some kind of "connection"..he was a man with an "edge" and he saw that I knew how to connect with that. He called me his "Poster Boy" having done well with this unique surgery that very few surgeons were skilled to attempt.
I cannot imagine the countless lives he has touched and I am so sorry. May he be resting in heaven with nothing less but 1st class accommodations.
Warmest condolences
A patient of a special man

As a very, very fortunate patient whose heart was repaired by Dr. Cohn, I am so saddened by his loss. I was honored that his hands touched my heart and changed my life.
I also saw a wonderful sense of humor while he and I were interviewed for a television program together featuring his work. The program applied a touch of face makeup right before we appeared on camera and I recall him turning to me and with a little smile whispered, I'm going to wear this makeup for a few days. It makes me look so young. It sure lightened my stage fright!
My deepest condolences to his family, friends, colleagues and for the world for this loss.

To the Family of Dr. Cohn,
It was with great sadness that I read of the passing of such a great physician and man. I personally received an Aortic Heart Valve Replacement back in 2005 under the skilled hands of Dr. Cohn. I am 86 years old and believe my life was prolonged due to his life's devotion to excellence in Cardiac Care. I just wanted to express my sincerest condolences to his wife and children. May he rest now in God's loving care. Sincerely, James Williams (Pepperell, MA)

Dear Roberta, Leslie, and Jennifer,
I am devastated! The world is smaller and less interesting without Larry. It is hard to describe the importance and impact that he had on my life. My interest in cardiothoracic surgery led me to his lab, but his generosity and mentorship led to a lifelong friendship that I hold very dear. Roberta, both you and Larry have been so kind and supportive of me, and I smile inside when I think of many shared memories. Of course, most of them were causes of great amusement to Larry and he relished telling those stories to witness my discomfort. I always sought Larry out when we were together at meetings because I so enjoyed his energy, his quick wit, and his ability to make me laugh. I am thinking of you in this time of loss and can only say that my life, and the lives of countless others, are better for having Larry in them. Thank you for sharing him.
Much love,
Doug

In November of 2010 Dr. Cohn replaced my mitral valve with a St.Jude valve. I feel very blessed and grateful to have had him preform my surgery. I will never forget how he came to visit me every day for 10 days to see how I was doing while I was in the hospital. Not only was he a great talented surgeon, he was a caring and compassionate doctor to his patients. Deepest sympathy to his family.

Dear Cohn Family,
On behalf of the membership of the Badminton and Tennis Club, we would like to express our condolences, sadness and shock over Larry's passing.
We all knew that he was a talented, respected giant in his field, but what we saw was a fun-loving fellow tennis fanatic who brought that focus and intensity from his professional life to the courts along with an unfailing sense of sportsmanship and generosity.
It seems a bit ironic that a man who spent his life saving and trying to save others, including multiple occasions right on our tennis courts, is no longer available to us. Hard to believe.
Simply put, he was just a great guy, appropriately intense and great fun to play with.
He will be sorely missed by all of us.

It was very sad for my family to hear of Dr. Cohn's passing. My father was one of his many fortunate patients who was given many extra years in this world thanks to Dr. Cohn's amazing expert talents. He performed open heart surgery on my father twice, the 2nd after 20 years! Our thoughts are with his family and his many colleagues.

Lisa and I would like to express our sincerest condolences. I have lost my lifelong mentor. Larry, more than anyone, was responsible for my decision to become a physician, and then a cardiothoracic surgeon. From an early age, when I worked in his laboratory, his zeal for surgery and teaching was infectious.
We were so privileged to host you recently in Cleveland, and we hope to see you soon when we are in Boston.

My dear Roberta and family:
We all have been blessed to have had Larry in our lives.
Yes, he was the "Master of Masters"; but he was a generous "Master" as he shared his great knowledge of cardiac surgery and life with the young surgeons, as well as those of us, the young entrepreneurs, who needed his wisdom, as we developed the tools that the cardiac surgeon needed, such as the St. Jude Valve, pacemakers, etc.
He was always there when I needed him.....
I will miss him.

To the family of Dr. Cohn, he replaced my failing defective natural valve with a mechanical St. Jude valve on Thursday November 19th, 2009. Since that time I awoke to hear it ticking away and always remember him. When some people ask if it bothers me to hear it ticking, I smile and say "No, it is reassuring."
Thank you Dr. Cohn.

Dear Cohn Family,
I met Dr. Cohn for the first time when he came over to visit Israel In 1994. After about a year we met again when I came to the BWH as a foreign Fellow. Dr Cohn heared from me that my wife and two kids came with me to Boston. A few weeks later, without me asking from him, he called me to his room and told me he found a way to raise my salary, and I meen RAISE! He did not have to, but that's who he was.
In the next two years I learned from him and about him. In the next 20 years I understood how privileged I was to be one of his students. Although I live and work far away, across the Atlantic, Many tmes in my professional life I asked him for his advice and always got a good and solid answer.
Dr. Cohn was a unique man, an outstanding surgeon and teacher, a great teacher.
He will be remneberd as one of the pioneers in Cardiac Surgery.

My heartfelt condolences. It was the saddest news to hear of Dr. Cohn's passing. He was a young cardiac surgeon at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in the early 1970s when he gave me the opportunity to spend much of my free time as a college student over a period of three years working in his laboratory in Building E of the Harvard Medical School. He was a lifelong inspiration, mentor, advisor - I would even say a father figure - whom I looked up to and admired throughout his great career in Cardiac Surgery. I had the pleasure of keeping in touch with him until recently. He will be very much missed.
