LEE SHAPIRO Obituary

Shapiro, Lee Harris With heavy hearts we would like to share that Lee Shapiro of Sharon, passed away peacefully on November 23rd in his 67th year. Devoted husband of Gloria Barczak; father to Zachary Shapiro and brother of Ann Leda Shapiro. Lee was an exceptional student during his youth in New York City. He joined MENSA and was accepted to one of the best high schools in the country. Often known as the "Human Calculator," he was gifted in the subjects of math and science. He was also a political activist taking a bus from NYC down to Selma and going to Washington, DC to hear Martin Luther King's "I have a Dream" speech. After graduating high school, Lee found that college was not for him and after a few years, he moved to San Francisco. It was there that he started a band and traveled the world playing street music with wonderful musicians who became his close friends. Lee explored many different work-related activities including selling audio equipment, selling sneakers/shoes/roller blades on college campuses and flea markets, and creating web sites. More recently, he ran Sharon House Concerts abringing a variety of professional musicians to Massachusetts. Music was his passion and through it, he met many wonderful people from all over the world. He survived near impossible brain cancer at the age of 45, and lived to see his son graduate college, 22 years later. There will be no funeral or memorial service. A celebration of Lee's life will be held in the next several months. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Boston Bluegrass Union, earmarked for the Kids Academy. Donations may be sent to: Treasurer, Boston Bluegrass Union, PO Box 650061, West Newton, MA 02465.

Lee was our friend and neighbor. He always had a good word to say about me, my family and even my dog. I enjoyed talking with him about music, books, growing up and especially had fun pushing his buttons on politics. Once he asked me a legal question and right away I became the best lawyer in his world!
I remember buying sneakers from him out of his driveway and teasing him that they must have been "hot". His house concerts were always a kick ; he and Gloria mastered the art of gracious hosts. In summer I will miss his presence down at "the beach". A big man with an even bigger heart. Rest in peace my friend.

What does one look for in a friend? One looks for unconditional love and unconditional support. Lee, you gave me both and for that I will always be grateful. We had a moment of silence for you at our house concert on 11/27/15. It was recalled that your support of music and musicians inspired us to have house concerts. Thanks for all you did for all of us.

I will miss Lee very much. Whenever I came to a house concert, and he saw my enjoyment of the performance, he would say: "It makes me happy to see you so happy". My deepest condolences to Gloria and Zach. "May his memory be a blessing".
