Leonard Horne Obituary

HORNE, Leonard C. Laddie 83, of Wayne, Maine, died November 4 in Auburn, ME of cancer. He was born on October 21, 1925 in Chicopee, MA, the son of William and Mary C. Horne. Laddie grew up in Holyoke, MA. Lying about his age, he joined the Navy at 16 and at 17 served as a radioman in the South Pacific from 1943-1946. He returned to Japan after the war and worked for the U.S. government. He attended The Boston School for Practical Arts and worked in the art department of Sanborn Company. Laddie married Brigitte Eberle in 1957, moving to Acton, MA where they lived for 35 years. He started his own commercial art business, Studio 6 in Boston. He later established an advertising agency, Horne Associates; both companies operated in the Boston area until 1994. Laddie became a Mason, being raised in Dalhousie Lodge in Newtonville, MA and became a member of Charles A. Welch Lodge in Maynard, where he served as Worshipful Master in 1990. He was a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason in the Valley of Boston. Laddie retired to Wayne, Maine in 1994 where he lent his artistic and graphic design skills to local organizations. He renewed his passion for Asian art creating watercolor florals in the Oriental tradition. Laddie's artistic sensibility infused every aspect of his life from how the table was set, to the arrangement of stones in a wall or a garden to the endless appreciation of a glorious sunset. Laddie is survived by his wife of 51 years, Brigitte Horne, daughter and son-in-law Eric and Lynette Stinneford of Wayne, ME, son and daughter-in-law Robert and Christine Horne of Littleton, MA, granddaughters Eliza and Kelsey Stinneford and Nyla Horne, his sister Eileen Halkyard of South Hadley, MA, his sister and brother-in-law Robert and Mary Sadler of Hamden, CT, his brothers and sisters-in-law James and Lillian Horne and Robert and Joyce Horne of Holyoke, MA, and many nieces and nephews. Burial will be private. Memorial contributions may be sent to Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice, Post Office Box 819, Lewiston, ME 04243-9800

Lynette, sorry to hear of your fathers passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Being that we had little contact after we had all grow up and moved away, the enduring images that I have of your father are the day-to-day experiences from living across the street; playing horseshoes with Donald and Bill during the summer evenings until it was too dark to see, supervising the bonfire in the garden, trudging behind the snow blower the morning after a winter storm, and the echo of "Robert Scott" reverberating through the neighborhood.

Mr.Horne,
Sir, I would just like to say thank you for your service and sacrifice for our Country when you served with the USN in the Pacific during WW II and for being a member of the Greatest Generation. And to your family and loved ones, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy.
