LORRAINE AHERN Obituary

Ahern, Lorraine Of Belmont passed away October 6, 2014. The daughter of the late Frederick and Elsa Weinz and sister to the late Albert Weinz, Lorraine is survived by William Ahern, her husband of 68 years, as well as by daughters Kim Ahern of Littleton, Kristen Harrigan and her husband Neil of Acton, and son Mark Ahern of Lincoln. Also survived by grandchildren Martine, Jin, Max and Jackson. Born March 11, 1925 Lorraine spent her early years in Arlington, MA and Hampton, NH. After high school she lived in Somerville and attended Fisher College. Upon graduation, Lorraine worked at The New England Journal of Medicine. Following her wedding to Will in 1946 at the Park Avenue Congregational Church in Arlington and a subsequent honeymoon in New York, the couple moved to Iowa State University in Ames, where Will had attended college prior to active military service. Lorraine worked in the Ceramics Department at ISU while Will earned his degree. After Will's graduation, they moved back east to Cambridge before settling in Belmont, where they raised their family. Having experienced an unsettled childhood when her parents separated, Lorraine ensured that her children were given a well grounded, happy family life. Her family members' birthdays and personal milestones were celebrated with feasts and thoughtfully selected gifts. Lorraine was an accomplished cook who always had something special baking for her kids when they got home from school, and when they grew up, she continued the tradition for her grandchildren. A healthy balance of work and play was encouraged in Lorraine's household. Misbehavior on the part of the kids was addressed, but not dwelled upon. Summers spent at the family cottage on Cape Cod presented new fun and adventure opportunities for the children, some of those activities encouraged and some tolerated by Lorraine, who had seemingly endless patience. Fortunate to maintain lifelong friends from her youth in Arlington and Hampton, Lorraine also enjoyed close friendships with neighbors in Belmont and Eastham. Get-a-ways to Aruba, Florida, and Bermuda with friends provided fond memories, as did trips to London and Paris with Will. Dearly missed by her family and friends, Lorraine will be remembered for her loving and supportive manner. A gathering of family and friends to honor Lorraine is being planned.
