LUCILLE ACKERMAN Obituary

ACKERMAN, Lucille E. Ackerman Family Matriarch – Longtime Salem and Arlington Resident and Teacher Lucille E. Ackerman, nee Saffer, wife of the late Dr. Joseph I. Ackerman, Jr., (deceased May 9, 1985) passed peacefully on November 25, 2016, at home in Hartsdale, NY. Born (August 1, 1916) and educated in her beloved Salem, MA, she graduated from Salem State Teachers College in 1937 and, during a long and distinguished career, taught in Salem, Norwell, and Washington, DC, and Arlington, MA. She met her husband of 41 years, an MIT student, when he came to play on Salem's public tennis courts with her brother, Charles. When they lived in Oklahoma, Mrs. Ackerman was actively involved in League of Women Voters, Little Theater Guild, and Girl Scouts. She continued to work with Brownies and Cub Scouts after moving to Arlington, MA in 1957, where she lived until 2002, at which time she moved to live with her daughter and son-in-law in Hartsdale. In 1962, Mrs. Ackerman returned to teaching at Arlington's Locke and Parmenter Elementary Schools, retiring in 1983. She was a member of the Emma Rogers and Cardinal and Gray Societies of MIT, Friends of the Robbins Library, Arlington Historical Society, League of Women Voters, and Massachusetts Teachers Retirement Association, and was an Honorary Member of the Westford Academy Alumni Association. Mrs. Ackerman leaves a daughter, Ellen S. Ackerman-Kaviar, CNS, of Hartsdale, NY, a son, Dr. Joseph J. H. Ackerman of St. Louis, MO, and a nephew, Attorney Martin V. N. Saffer of Marlington, WV. She also leaves four grandchildren, Attorney Eric G. J. Kaviar of Brookline, MA, Attorney Brian G. J. Kaviar of Bethesda, MD, Joseph W. Ackerman, and Stephanie J. Ackerman-Rieck, RN, of St. Louis, MO, and one great-grandchild, Benjamin Kaviar, of Brookline, MA. Her brother, Dr. Charles M. Saffer, Jr. of Levittown, PA, predeceased her in 2004. Services were private, with arrangements by Badger Funeral Home, Littleton, MA. Lucille was laid to rest next to her dear husband Joseph in historic Fairview Cemetery, Westford, MA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Boys Town, Attention: Sy Nicholson, 200 Flanagan Blvd, PO Box 8000, Boys Town, NE 68010. (Phone: 800-217-3700; URL: http://www.boystown.org)

Joe and Ellie,
Please accept our deepest sympathy. Your Mom was a very special lady. I have such great memories of visiting and talking with her, the only customer that would check on Bruce and I when we shoveled snow, letting me walk Lucky and inviting me to a few family gatherings to be a friend to another guest my age. Our best thoughts and wishes are with you always.

I'm so sorry for your loss. She was my first grade teacher at Parmenter. I remember sitting on her lap while she patiently taught me how to say my ABCs without singing them. One of my favorite and memorable teachers.
