LEE, Marie A. A longtime resident of Duxbury passed away on April 19th after a brief illness. She was surrounded by her sons Jason and Jarrett, her husband of 54-years Jack, and friend Patricia Murphy. Marie, who her husband called "The Woman Who Eats Lunch Standing Up" was a woman of many talents and interests. She participated in the Duxbury Tennis ladder with her friend Suzanne Mahoney where they finished 3rd out of several teams. As a golfer, she was more determined than skillful; and as a bocci player she was more of organizer of games than a bowler. Marie was a legend at Duxbury Free Library. She read authors from Abbot to Zweig. The number of books she read is currently still being tabulated as this obituary is being written. Jack and Marie traveled extensively throughout the United States, Asia, and Europe. In 2018, they traced the entire length of the Oregon Trail from Independence, Missouri (the site of the Harry S. Truman Library) to Camp Misery on the Pacific Coast. Her friends eagerly anticipated the Annual Christmas Party where the children of her friends decorated the tree, had snow ball fights, and performed in Christmas themed plays. The adults and children concluded the event by singing carols. Other parties included "Create a T-Shirt," "Name that Tune," "Poetry Slam," and Halloween. The most popular party among her friends was the "Bocce Party" where the games were competitive, but also played in the spirit of good sportsmanship. Presently, the games have been postponed because many of the competitors can no longer compete due to the weight of the bocce ball. For many, many years, each Monday 12 women would gather to compete in a high stakes game of Ma-Jong. Tuesdays Marie would play golf with her friends at North Hill CC, Wednesdays was Canasta Day, Thursdays was Bridge Day, and Fridays Marie would wait by the phone in case the Group needed a substitute player. Marie, after graduating with honors from Salem State College became a career educator in Everett. She taught 4th grade for several year before becoming a Director of Reading at the Parlin Jr. High School. Several years later she became the Directory of Curriculum for the Everett Public School System until her retirement in 2005. For 40-years Monday-Friday in fair and foul weather she traveled North on Route 3, over the Mystic Tobin Bridge, onto Everett Avenue in Chelsea, then to the office of the Everett Superintendent of Schools on Irving Street. Visiting Hours will be held on Monday, April 25, 2022 from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the MacDonald Funeral Home, 1755 Ocean Street in MARSHFIELD.
