Dr. Kaplan is fondly remembered. He saved my life and gave me many years I most likely would not have. He was my doctor for close to 40 years since 1972 and we became Friends as well as having the doctor patient relationship. I miss the conversations and banter about his tennis and my golf play. Very sad when I heard of his passing and hope to see him when my time comes. Heartfelt condolences to all family and friends.

I will always remember Marshall for his amazing medical skill. Because of him, I was diagnosed with a liver disease which he treated and which has been kept under control now for decades. Without his help, I may not be celebrating my 80th birthday this year. I will always be grateful and send my best to Nancy and the family.

My heart is truly broken over the passing of Dr.Kaplan. I have been a PBC patient of his for 25 years. He was my "miracle doc" , my educator, my lifeline, my cheerleader, my comfort. There is an entry in this guest book that said he was the great combination of a kind heart and a brilliant mind....a perfect description.
My heart goes out to his family and friends....he will be truly missed but, the impact he has had on so many for so long will live forever. Thank you, Dr. Kaplan and may God bless.

Dr. Kaplin was my doctor, he treated me for my liver disease and I am here today because of him.
He has set forth wheels in motion for me to get the proper treatment I will be needing. He never said we weren't going to make it and he made sure of that over every bump and around every curve. I feel so fortuanate to have had him as my doctor, he was known to me as the "Angel in the white lab coat". He will be greatly missed.
My heart goes out to his family, With Deepest Sympathy.

I was a patient of Dr Kaplan's for 26 years (Since 1986). He has helped me countless times. He was always willing to listen and talk about what was ailing you. He always made you feel like you were his most important patient. No issue was too small or too large for him. His experience and insight was second to none. I am deeply saddened by his passing.

My wife and I are greatly saddened to hear of Dr. Kaplan's passing. I have been his patient since 1974. He has always encouraged and motivated us through the worsed of times and has improved the quality of my life both in health and spirit. We will miss his bow tie, cheerful greetings, wonderful treatment and mostly his mere presence. It has been a pleasure to not only be in his care but to know him.

Dr. Kaplan and my family go back to 1974. I have been his patient for all this time. He kept me alive with PBC so that in 1984 I received my liver transplant. Because of him I was able to watch my children grow, graduate from high school and college, marry and give me blessed grandchildren. He gave me my life back. He was a brilliant, kind man. I still feel his smiling prescence around me. My heartfelt condolences to Mrs. Kaplan and his family. The world, NEMC and everyone who he touched is better off for knowing this wonderful man. Dr. Kaplan, you will forever have a special place in my heart.

My heart goes out to Dr Kaplan's family. I was a patient of his since 2001 and received excellent care and advice. I had no idea what PBC was when I was diagnosed, but soon met Dr. Kaplan and was given many of his ariticles to read to help me understand what I was going through and how to live with it. He had a way of putting you at ease no matter what questions you asked. He gave me excellent care and advice and I will always be grateful for having met this wonderful person. We truly have lost a wonderful person in Dr. Kaplan.

For me, as for many others who've left their wishes here, Dr. Kaplan was a lifesaver. I so enjoyed getting to know Dr. K. over the last 5+ years, and marveled at his ability to tell his patients hard truths while always keeping them encouraged and moving forward. At my last visit in June, Dr. K. said that he had told his wife that my improved ALK numbers "had made his week". Just one more example of the care and dedication he had for his patients. My sincere sympathies to Dr. Kaplan's wife and family. He was truly one of a kind!

I am so sadden by the passing of Dr. Kaplan. I have been his patient since 1987 and he often told me I was his Poster Child. 15 years ago my second life began with a new liver . Without his knowledge and expertise I would not be here today. His gentle spirit, kindness, and patience, made me feel so special. The medical world will be lost without him. My condolences to Mrs. Kaplan and his family. May God wrap you with His comforting arms, and give you His strength to carry you through this difficult time of loss.

Dr. Kaplan saved my life 15 years ago. He was a brilliant doctor and researcher AND a compassionate and approachable man. My wife and I would drive from Virginia to Boston at least once a year as much to BE WITH Dr. Kaplan as to receive his medical advice. We always walked away with new hope and confidence. We feel an emptiness with his passing, though nothing like the emptiness has family, close friends, and co-workers must feel. We will be forever grateful for having had Dr. Kaplan in our lives.

Dr Kaplan was the pioneer in treating and slowing rare liver diseases. As his patient since 1987, he has given me far more years (arguably decades) of life, given the inexorable nature of PSC. He pulled me through serious liver infections, colitis flares, liver blockages and a host of other serious medical challenges. He reviewed my liver biopsies personally. He had a truly genuine personal concern for me the way a parent worries about his child. Through his efforts, I have lived into middle age and have a family. My longevity is both his success as well as my own, though he never took credit when I mentioned this to him. Dr. Kaplan was brilliant yet humble, attentive, caring, and enormously clever. He understood how to relay information to a patient that did not remove all hope, even in the midst of organ failure. Removing doubt and fear in patients is a rare yet valuable commodity in the medical industry. He did this for me when I met him as a 16-year-old with stage 4 liver disease. I am truly saddened, hurt, and uncertain of a future without him. Yet I also feel fortunate as one of the lucky ones who did have a strong patient-physician/friend relationship with Dr. Kaplan. At least PSC gave me that.

What a grievous shock! My college pal and med school roommate—always athletic, always brilliant, always modest—is now gone.
My heart goes out to his family, especially to Nancy who has helped me in many ways, over many years, and to Bill, who worked with my wife, Laura.
Medicine has lost a versatile, gifted and reliable contributor.
