Martha Beckley Obituary

BECKLEY, Martha Estelle Of Malden, MA, at the age of 64, passed away on April 4, 2011 after a ten month battle with cancer. She previously lived in Cambridge, MA, New York City, and Middletown, New York. She was the daughter of the late Stewart and Elizabeth Houghton Beckley of Cooperstown, New York. Martha Beckley was a gifted occupational therapist, working with physically and mentally disabled people in their homes. Martha received her Bachelor of Art Degree in Occupational Therapy at New York University in February, 1973, and her Master of Science from Boston University in 1980. She completed post-graduate studies at Boston University in 1993. Martha was a member of the National Rehabilitation Association and a Licensed Rehabilitation Counselor in Massachusetts. Martha loved to garden more than anything. She loved the ocean. She loved creating and owning handicrafts, much of which she obtained while travelling. Martha enjoyed talking to people, and she made an impression on everyone she met. She was always willing to help her friends, family, and neighbors. She had a great sense of humor and a contagious laugh. She took joy in something she saw or experienced every day. She cared deeply about community, justice, peace, the environment, and animal welfare. Her sister, Jane, was by her side in her Malden home at the time of her death, as was her close friend Martha Goldstein, also of Malden. She leaves behind many close relatives and friends. There will be no funeral or calling hours. Friends will be contacted in the future about memorial plans. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Cape Ann Animal Aid, 260 Main St, Gloucester, MA. 01930.

I was so sorry to hear of Martha's passing. She was a dear friend of my grandmother, Irene Warren, who passed away last September. Martha was a frequent visitor to our home in Haverhill when my grandmother was living there. She had a sunny disposition and always made me laugh. My thoughts are with her family.

Martha was an amazingly intelligent, funny, insightful woman. Tuned in and turned on! We laughed out loud and often about the world, politics, minutia ... I just loved every moment we shared.
I know your joy and laughter is just an infectious wherever you are now, Martha. I will miss you -

Martha was a great lady with a wonderful sense of humor. I've known her since she attended the Enterprise Center in 2000 to develop her gardening business. Always made me laugh. She will be missed

I too went to school with Martha. She always made any event so much more fun when she was there. The world is a sadder place without Martha Beckley in it. We will all miss her.

I am a 1964 Cooperstown High School classmate of Martha's and wish to express my sympathy to all of Martha's family. I still have fond memories of a birthday party at the family farmhouse when we were very young. Martha always had a twinkle in her eye and a wonderful sense of humor. We will certainly miss her but will keep her memory with us always.

Martha was not only a good friend, but an amazing boss. She and I have known each other for 35 years and in that time we had many laughs, tears, and I learned what a caring and intelligent woman she was. I have always admired the caring and respect she showed all of the people that she cared for. To Jane and Martha, she was the best Sister and friend and you will miss her. I know you both will understand when I say "Live Life to the Fullest.
Rest in peace my dear friend.

I too was touched by Martha as a nurse who cared for her at end of life. She struck me as an amazing lady and I believe I am better for having met her in this life. My thoughts are with Martha and Jane and all those who loved her.
