MARY SHIA Obituary

SHIA, Mary Keegan Age 71, of Watertown, passed away peacefully on February 15, 2022 surrounded by her loving family. She was born to the late James and Anne (Heffernan) Keegan on May 22, 1950 in Kildare, Ireland. She completed school in Ireland before moving to the United States where she met and married Wei-Lee and raised their family in Brookline. She worked for herself for many years and went on to obtain her undergraduate degree from University of Massachusetts and her Master's in Anthropology from Harvard University. She worked as the director for development at Harvard University School of Design for many years raised funds for various scholarships such as Edman Rice Scholarship, and went on to work in a similar capacity for Institute for International Urban Development before moving to Mass Bay Community College to work for their development office as a vice president. While she was there, she earned the McKenzie award for the highest level of service voted on by the president, faculty and student for her years of dedication and hard work. She will be remembered by the many students that she helped over the years to achieve their goal of education and a career. She is lovingly remembered by her beloved husband, Wei-Lee; and three children Derek (Kara) Shia of Madison, Connecticut, Ashling (Late James) Casselman of Brighton, and Mitchel Shia of Cambridge. She will be forever remembered by her six adoring grandchildren Eric, Wyatt, Madison, Cormac, Samantha, and Beckett; as well as her siblings Larry, James, Antoinette, Tony, Declan, Aiden, and PJ and Rose Ita; sister/brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, family and friends. Mary will be forever remembered for her loving nature, always think of everyone before herself. Her hard working and determination was truly a force of nature. She was the oldest of nine children. She has been a positive influence and friend to so many people near and far. She loved traveling to new and interesting places and loved the history involved. Whether it was trips to Egypt, South Africa, Peru, China, Vietnam, Cambodia, or to Europe, she traveled the globe in pursuit of new adventure. She loved her grandchildren most of all and basked in their love and attention. She enjoyed a good party and the opportunity to spend time with family and friends. We were so saddened to learn of Mary´s death! Mary was so welcoming to our family when we moved next door to her family in that special neighborhood on Windsor Road in Brookline. We watched each others´ children grow up, and were always welcome in her family´s rambling Victorian. Our hearts go out to Wei-Lee, Mitchell, Derek, Aisling and Mary´s siblings. May her memory be a blessing.

I am shocked. I just emerged out of my pandemic bubble to hear this sad news. My deepest condolences to Mary's large, loving family.

Mary was my boss at MassBay and one of the most earnest and heartfelt people I knew. As others have said, she always cared for those in need, especially students. She was a woman of peace, but if someone needed an advocate, she'd make 'good trouble' for them.

She supported me in my career at MassBay. I thought we'd have time to catch up after I left there, for coffee and chatting. It never happened.

I will remember Mary as a caring colleague. So sorry we can't turn back the hands of time for one more sprightly laugh. May she rest in peace.

Mary was a joy to work with at MassBay. She was my go to person for students in tough circumstances. She made solutions happen quickly. Many students adored her and appreciated everything she did for them. Many more benefited from her work, even if they didn't know it. I have fond memories of visiting her office and chatting about favorite Irish and British treats. She left a hole when she had to retire due to her health and will continue to be missed.

On behalf of the Massachusetts Bay Community College Foundation I send our deepest sympathies to Mary's husband and children. Mary was a very inspirational person who not only greatly furthered the mission of our Foundation but who genuinely liked and cared for the college's students. They knew her door was always open to them when they had problems. She is greatly missed.

I was absolutely stunned to see Mary's face staring at me from the obituary page of the Boston Globe this morning. The last time I saw her was exactly two years ago, right before the pandemic changed the world. As we shared our plans for upcoming trips to Ireland, I never in my wildest imagination, would have thought that would be the last time I would ever see her. A wonderful person has left this earth. My condolences to Wei-Lee, Derek, Aisling, Mitchel, and her entire family. Rest in peace Mary, you will be greatly missed.

I feel so blessed to have worked with Mary. She advocated with joy and dedication for the best outcomes for all the community at MassBay, but with a special commitment to students overcoming financial hurdles to their degree & most especially single parents. She brought sincerity and straight-up joy to support for students, connecting them to emergency funds and the foundation that helped in transformative moments. I know many of the students she helped, and when I had a student in need, I was confident in calling her, knowing she'd find a way. To Mary's family: thank you for sharing her with us. What a beautiful, grounded, indefatigable dreamer who believed in community.
