Dear Mrs. and Mr. Nagle, It has been a year now since Matt's death and I can only say I think of him often. I can only imagine how much you miss him! He was such a special person, someone who touched my heart and left a print that will never fade! I learned so much from Matt taking care of him, we shared some great conversations, ones I will never forget. I often wonder how long his good deads will go on in the future. I still believe what he did donating his body to science for future cures for spinal cord injuries will someday find a cure! God Bless to your family, we miss you! Take care and always remember you have one great angel up there watching over you! Love Kathy

Dear Nagle Family,
I need to express my deepest sympathy to you and your family. I don't know you or your son Matt, but I know of your story. I was compelled to write to you because, we just recently lost our daughter Nicole. She was disabled, she was born with Spina Bifida, she was in a electric wheelchair and finally out on her own when she died.
.......I wanted to tell you that our children are very special children given to us to help teach us and society something. Some get it and some don't. Your son was very corageous. He excepted his fate and moved forward and he has taught and inspired many! My daughter Nicole did too. This I found out at her services. Just know he is in heaven free of his disability. That can be comforting sometimes for me. We will miss our children forever but try and remember what they taught us, to move forward like they did. It is difficult sometimes, believe me I know, I take one day at a time.
......We have a guest book for Nicole too. We extended it for a year. It has been very therapeutic for us. If you ever want to visit it, her full name is M.Nicole Hill, she passed on October 30th 2006. I think you can get to it by putting that info in. If not my email will be available.
.....My thoughts and prayers will be with you. May God bless you!

Dear Nagle family,
I am really sorry for your loss. I worked with Matt during his participation in the BrainGate study. He was very driven to help himself and pave the way for others who might find themselves in a similar predicament. I remember him showing us a letter from Christopher Reeves, stating that he should stay hopeful. His enthusiasm throughout our study and his motivation in learning about new clinical studies made me feel like he shared this hope.

Dear Ellen, Pat and Michael,
I am so very saddened by the news of Matt's passing. I met Matt soon after his injury in 2001. I was his nurse at the Shepherd Center in Atlanta, Ga. Ironically, I was back visting Shepherd this past week when I learned the news of his death. Matt and I formed a friendship over the couple of months at Shepherd and since we were both from the Boston area, we clicked immediately. I have followed Matt's story throughout. Despite losing touch with Matt and his family, I thought of you all quite often. Having been an RN for 7 years now, no patient of mine has ever or will ever take the place of Matt Nagle in my heart. He truly was a couragous person who could not give up. I believe he is free now and smiling at us from heaven. He has made a lasting impression on spinal cord injury research, you all should be proud of him. My thoughts and prayers are with you always.
Sincerely, Heidi Pettey

To the Nagle Family,
My name is Chris and I live on the same unit that Matt lived on at Sinai. Despite living only three rooms away from him, I did not know him as well as I would like to have. We did speak on occasion and he was a real nice guy. He would speak of his injury, the latest movies he had bought, which he was kind enough to share with me and of life in general. He was a strong, caring person who touched my life as well as those of others. He will be greatly missed by us all on Wing 1CR North.
His participation in the Brain Gate research will without a doubt help other disabled individuals one day and in this way, his memory will forever live on.
You were very devoted to your son and saw to it that he had happiness in his life by visiting him frequently, bringing him real food and taking him out on day trips quite often. Having lived at Sinai for the past 17 years, I have seen many patients not have a single visitor. Matt always had company, which was great to see.
In closing, I want to offer you my sincere condolences for your loss. I know that Matt has the freedom he has always wanted and is no longer suffering.
God Bless,

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Nagle,
I am a respiratory therapist at NE Sinai Hospital. I am also the mother of a son born at the same hospital, same day, one-half hour apart. Not knowing Matt personally, I did know a lot of his friends. I have followed his story since day 1 and like many other readers I too believe he was an inspiration. The Nagle family you are a class act! You always said and did the right things, you put Matt and his needs first, this is something not many people do. Matt can never be replaced but once again his family is giving to others, anyone who gains from this terrible situation I hope will take a part of Matt with them through out their life! Condolences to the entire Nagle family, may Matt rest in peace!

Dear Pat, Ellen and Michael,
My memories of Matt seem to preceed most everyone else's in this guestbook: I was lucky to have been one of his babysitters. I will never forget his smiling face covered with baby food and having Scarlet come and "kiss" it off while he laughed like crazy! As a high school teacher I have met thousands of young adults, but Matty is the one I feel the most privileged to have known. He was here on earth for a special reason and those of us who knew him/followed his story are better for having had him in our lives. May you find peace knowing his spirit and example will never, ever be forgotten.

Dear Nagle family, Not long ago a family member of mine suffered a spinal cord injury. Upon hearing about it, Matt called me and was sincerely concerned. He completely put aside his severe condition and wanted to help any way he could with advice, encouragement, or just listening. It inspired and amazed me that he could care the way he did while dealing with this injury himself. Matt has left his footprint on this world. He was willing to risk his being to further spinal cord research. So many will benefit because of him. I am praying for all of you.

I am just a random reader of the Globe, but am touched by this mans heroism. As a mother, a grandmother, and common citizen, he leaves me speechless! There are some things that cannot be learned quickly and time which is all that we have is paid heavily for their acquiring. I used to play hockey with Matty back in the day. I remember he was one of the best players on the team, but what I remember most about him as a teammate was that he was absolutely hilarious in the locker room.
A couple of years ago, I was at the Copenhegan Airport in Denmark and I bought a magazine for my flight to I forget where I was going. On the plane, I opened the Magazine only to find an article about Matt Nagle from Weymouth, Mass. I looked around the plane feeling cool that I knew a famous person. It was an article about him down at Brown University writing stuff on a screen with his thoughts. Not to sound corny, but in the first 21 years of his life, he was the coolest kid in Massachusetts, and in the last 6 years of his life, he was one of the most inspirational people on earth. I'm sure he's doing jumping jacks and sprints where ever he is right now.
See you on the flip side Matty!

I just read Matt's story and am very impressed by it. Please take some condolence from the fact that to me (and I am sure to many others also) Matt is an incredible guy and a true inspiration.

Nagle family,
I could not believe it when I saw this, I live in Ohio now and I took care of Matt at the Sinai. It breaks my heart, I think about him often and have read about him when I left the Sinai, I will never forget this courageous and wonderful individual, I wish I had made it back to see and talk with him about all the advances he participated in. I keep him close to my heart. I will also never forget the kindness of his family, Mrs. Nagle made me an apple pie for thanksgiving the year I cared for Matt. Thank you endlessly. I am blessed to have had a piece of Matt in my life. Colleen Rinehart (Hayes) If the Nagle's read this...please let me know what happened to Matt [email protected] My love and sympathy goes out to you!!

I just heard about Matt. I am so sorry. My heart goes out to you on this tremendous loss. He was a son any parent, would and could, wish to have. That handsome smile with a twinkle in his eye will be remembered. A courteous gentleman with a boatload of athleticism just a couple of traits he got from his Mom and Dad. We are at your side if you need anything at all. Our heartfelt condolences go out to you and your family.

I never met Matthew but followed his life story in the newspapers frequently. He was dealt a hard hand to play but he accepted his fate with courage and determination. May he rest in peace.

Nagle Family:
I personally do not know Matthew or your family but I am from Weymouth and have followed Matthew's story from day one. My deepest heartfelt sympathy goes out to all of you and all of Matthew's friends. Matthew is at peace now and knowing that a part of him will carry on with your decision to donate his organs. Please know that my brother was a receiver of a double kidney transplant over 25 years ago and doing very well. So your very difficult decision during these difficult days will brighten the life of someone else just as Matthew seemed to brighten the lives of the many people that not only knew him but have followed your family's story. God Bless all of you and know that many, many people are praying and have prayed for you.
