MAX STACKHOUSE Obituary

STACKHOUSE, Rev. Dr. Max L. Passed away at the age of 80 at his home in West Stockbridge, Massachusetts, on Saturday, January 30. After graduating from DePauw University and Harvard Divinity School, Dr. Stackhouse was ordained by the United Church of Christ and went on to be internationally recognized as a theologian in the field of Christian social ethics. After early involvement in the civil rights movement, he pioneered work in public theology, economics, globalization, and ecclesiastical concerns. Dr. Stackhouse's writings and teachings spanned more than half a century and include approximately 500 articles, book reviews, and book chapters. He authored or edited 25 books, among them On Moral Business; Creeds, Societies & Human Rights; and his last major work, God & Globalization, a 4-part series sponsored by the Center for Theological Inquiry in Princeton, New Jersey. A Festschrift, Public Theology for a Global Society: Essays in Honor of Max Stackhouse, was published in 2010, followed by a book of essays, Shaping Public Theology: Selections from the Writings of Max L. Stackhouse in 2014, both by Eerdmans Press. Dr. Stackhouse held the Herbert Gezork Professorship at Andover Newton Theological School, where he was on the faculty for nearly 30 years before becoming the Stephen Colwell Professor of Christian Ethics, later the Rimmer and Ruth de Vries Professor of Reformed Theology and Public Life, at Princeton Theological Seminary from 1993 to 2006. Dr. Stackhouse held numerous international visiting professorships, with long-term relationships at United Theological College in Bangalore, India, China and South Korea, and within the former Eastern Block, with additional lecturing, conferences, and teaching in Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, Fiji, Thailand, South Africa, Taiwan, Australia, Brazil, Europe, and the United States. Dr. Stackhouse served as president of the American Theological Society, the Society for Christian Ethics, and the James Luther Adams Foundation. He was instrumental in the founding and served as the director of the Abraham Kuyper Center for Public Theology at Princeton Theological Seminary, and was a founding member of numerous other groups, including the Reinhold Niebuhr Society, the Covenant Interest Group at the Society of Christian Ethics, and the China Academic Consortium, as well as the Berkshire Institute of Theology & the Arts, which he established with his wife, Jean Stackhouse, and led for 15 years. He was on the editorial boards of several journals, including The Christian Century, Journal of Religious Ethics, Journal of Political Theology, Religion in Eastern Europe, and Faith & International Affairs. He received a Leadership Award from the Center for Public Justice in 2007 and an honorary doctorate from his alma mater, DePauw University, in 1994. Locally, Dr. Stackhouse was an active member of the First Congregational Church of Stockbridge, an avid tennis player, music lover, and beloved spouse, father, brother, and grandfather. He was known for his sense of humor and generosity of spirit. He is survived by his wife, Jean Stackhouse, son Dale Stackhouse and daughter-in-law Robin Olds Stackhouse of Indianapolis, Indiana, son David and daughter-in-law Amy Stackhouse of Edgecomb, Maine, daughter Sara Stackhouse and son-in-law Johan de Besche of Arlington, Massachusetts, grandchildren Molly, Zachary, and Violet, and sister Judy Harris of St. Louis, Missouri. Dearest Stackhouse Family, please accept my deepest sympathies for the loss of Max. I remember his warm smile and kind wise words about any and every subject. Some of my best summer memories was growing up and attending the Theology and the Arts festivals at your home, all the amazing discussions in your living room which uplifted and brought music and theology together. They were some of the most spiritual and inspiring sessions while I was at Tanglewood and will treasure them always. Thank you for these wonderful memories, they will continue to live on. Sending you all our love and deepest sympathy.

It was with great sadness that I learned of Max's passing on. He was a great classmate at DePauw, and I highly valued being on a panel with him at our 50th class reunion. He leaves a void that may be impossible to fill. Jean and family, I am sorry for your loss, but the memory of his accomplishments and exemplary life ease the pain.

Valerie and I give our condolences to Jean. I got to know Max mostly through tennis. We had wonderful matches and enjoyed running each other around. Afterwards we would discuss the Bible and its meanings to each of us. I will sorely miss Max.

Dear Mrs. Stackhouse and family,
I grieve with you the loss of Dr. Stackhouse. At Princeton I took a class he taught entitled, Ethical Implications of the Synoptic Gospels. I appreciated his evident love of God, his razor sharp mind, hearty sense of humor, broad smile, and his kindness. He was especially good at integrating theory and practice. I am grateful and enriched for his tutelage.

For Max and Family,
Back years ago, the Stackhouse family lived only two blocks from our home on Lincoln Street in Newton Highlands. Our three sons, Ara, Greg, and Carl, strolled to the Hyde School to join the Stackhouse brood. We all attended the Newton Highlands Congregational Church, and we are still members.
Our entire family extend to the Stackhouse family our sincere heartfelt wishes over the loss of Max at eighty years. We believe the Lord called him home a bit early. The "World" surely needs his devotion and theological wisdom to light their way to the words of Christ.

Dear Jean and family,
Larry and I send our prayers, love, and peace to each one at this time of Max's passing to be with the Lord. The summers of playing tennis and hours of encouragement Max invested in me through various trials in life's journey will always be a treasure in my heart. He is one of those rare persons who can translate the life of the Lord to others just by his "being". His writings live on in "intellectual" realms...but his genuine love, concern, and encouragement of those he walked the earth with... who were privileged to stroll with him ...those treasures are in "forever" realms. We look forward to rejoicing with you on Saturday's tribute to his full, wonderful, and blessed life.
Devotedly,
Katherine and Larry

Dear Jean and family:
Please receive my condolences from afar on Max's passing.
Meeting Max as I did on at least three separate occasions, with some correspondence now and again in between, was both confronting and deeply pleasurable, and all the while light hearted too. We first met in January 1983 at Andover Newton. A dozen years later we shared a flight from Boston to Grand Rapids, a most appropriate journey in which to become absorbed in discussion about the way the "protestant ethic" dominated American and western and global social life. I was always surprised by the level and depth of his engagement in conversation even though our contact was necessarily brief and intermittent. I note the great volume of his publications but in my case the occasional personal encounter face-to-face or by letter was a lasting encouragement for which I'm grateful to the Lord.

Dear Jean and family, We are so sorry to hear of Max's death. It was always such a joy to my mother , Phyllis, when he called her. She would always share with the family how all of you were. It is hard being a part of a big family so spread out that we lose touch. You all are always in my prayers. We pray that the good memories will be a comfort at this time of loss. You all will be in our thoughts and prayers on Saturday during his memorial service. Thanks to Dale for updating us on the service. I shared the information with Betty Jean & Doris who will pass it on to others in the family.Your cousin, Gloria

Dear Jean,

I was so sorry to hear of Max's passing. It brought back very fond memories of him during my student days at Andover Newton. He was a big influence on my thinking and work, especially his involvement in social justice issues and, moreso, the way Max taught all of us to think profoundly. He was a great example of the way in which theory and practice could be integrated.
