Mike was a great friend of mine when we were at Middlebury. I remember talking with him as he was working on his American History thesis while in the Meredith Wing of the library. We were both at Middlebury over the summer of 1987; he lived in the Mill with my boyfriend and other friends. We spent a lot of time hanging out, swimming at Warren Falls, watching movies, going for drives, going to NYC, going to a Grateful Dead show at the Meadowlands. He worked as a waiter at the Italian restaurant in town. One time, we walked up to some campus housing after the Language Schools closed and "borrowed" some toilet paper from the bathrooms. I always thought of him as being the Scarecrow to my Dorothy, as in the Wizard of Oz. He stopped by to visit me when I was back at Middlebury finishing my thesis, living on Lake Dunmore, about a year and a half later. I lost touch with him after that, but I always remember him as a good friend. He died much much too soon. I am sending my deepest condolences to Sharon, Sophie, and Max and Mike's family.

To the Family and Friends of Dr. Chalfin,
I am so sorry for your loss. Dr. Chalfin was an expert psychiatrist and a wonderful human being. I consider myself lucky to have been a patient of his for several years up until when he stopped seeing patients. He was always incredibly patient, calm and understanding coupled with excellent knowledge and understanding of psychotropic medications. He helped me immensely. I will never forget him. Those of you who knew him well were lucky to have him in your lives. Again, I am so sorry for you all and for all we patients too.
Sincerely,
Mike M.

It still feels too sad to be possible. He was a doctor and healer of the highest caliber, and one of the loveliest human beings I've ever known. Dr. Chalfin, I will always be profoundly grateful to you for all you did to help me, over so many years. My deepest condolences to his family and all who love him.
