I just now learned of Dr. Mike's passing. He was a true Godsend to my son David, who has had serious heart problems from birth, and to our entire family. A very special man, whose devotion to his patients and his profession was truly remarkable. The good that Dr. Mike did for this world will never be able to be measured. Rest in peace, my friend.

There are angels among us and Dr Freed was one that that came into my life. When was born I was given 3 days to live. Forty-three years later I´m still alive. Dr Freed and the great medical staff at Children´s Hospital made that possible. Thank you God for bringing him into my life.

I just found out that Dr. Mike Freed has passed away. He saved my brother´s life in 1994 and remained his doctor until a few years ago. An excellent physician and an even better human being, he will be deeply missed. Thank you Dr Freed!

I was very lucky to get to know Michael through his membership in a support group for HCPs with CLL. His contribution through his knowledge and his calm and graceful demeanor when dealing with his second devastating cancer talk me much about how to live a good life and be a good person. I am very grateful to have known him. May his memory be a blessing. Dr. Brian Koffman, CLL Society.

So sorry for your loss. Our daughter was born 22 years ago with a heart arrhythmia. Dr. Freed oversaw our daughter's care during my pregnancy and during her first six years. He determined that she didn't need any treatment beyond being monitored once a year during that time to make sure her arrhythmia didn't get worse. It was always very comforting having her care overseen by him. His expertise was obvious but I also remember him as being very kind. Our daughter is now a senior in college.

To Jen, Josh & Steven,
We want to express our deepest condolences to you. The only time I (Nancy) met your dad was about 5 years ago at Highland Opticians. When I heard his name, I introduced myself & told him Jen & our daughter, Lisa, were friends at Bowen. He said his son (I think it was Josh) worked for Ken one summer at Newton Public Schools helping with computer work. We didn´t talk long, but he made an impression on me. He was a real mensch, & I won´t forget that. I miss seeing & talking to your mom too.
Take good care of yourselves.
Warmly,
Nancy & Ken Temkin, Lisa´s parents

Dr. Michael Freed was a renowned and very well respected cardiologist at Children´s Hospital in Boston. When my son, Charlie, was very sick and hospitalized at Children´s, initially they had a difficult time diagnosing him. Mike was kind enough to offer a professional consult and he immediately referred us to Dr. Jane Newburger, an expert in Kawasaki Disease. Jane knew exactly the course of treatment with this rare disease and what to do. I credit Mike with saving my son´s life. He was a caring, compassionate, extremely knowledgeable and sophisticated cardiologist. We need more Mike Freed´s in this world! May he rest in eternal peace.

In 1975 I moved to Warren Street in Newton Center down the Street from Mike and Marsha. They had Jennifer at the time and my son Ben was born shortly after we moved there. Later Josh and Steven were born. Our families spent many enjoyable times together and Jewish celebrations. Mike was always a wonderful and kind person to spend time with. His great sense of humor always helped to make our times together even more fun. These will always be great memories and I know he will be missed by his family and all who had the fortune to have known him. My condolences to his wife and family.

I was a nurse on the Cardiac OR team and often saw him conferring in the OR with Dr Castaneda. What a privilege to work with such dedicated and smart and thoughtful people.
I will always remember his serious mind and his charming wit.
What gifts he gave to the world!

A deeply compassionate man devoted to healing children and to medicine, and generous beyond measure. I was a stranger, and not a doctor, who read Mike´s essay on 50 years as a pediatric cardiologist and approached him to critique a draft of my biography of Helen Taussig. He became my teacher, critic, and advocate - as he was for the multitude of young doctors in his orbit, whether they studied and worked at Harvard or elsewhere. At Boston Children´s, I witnessed the awe that filled the rooms he entered. On a private tour of his beloved workplace, he walked me past the portraits of (mostly male) greats of medicine, fellow doctors in their labs, sick children in their rooms so colorfully decorated, all the while saying little. He was so quietly proud, so humble and yet, to the children of Boston and elsewhere, a king-like healer.

I feel privileged to have walked the same corridors of Mike. He had a profound influence on my life leading me into a career in pediatric cardiology. His ability to weave the history of the field into his teachings was second to none. More importantly, his support of all team mates and dedication to his patients was exemplary. Two fond memories - his consumption of coke cola in years past and bumping into him en route to the Canary Islands with a huge smile on his face surrounded by his family going to a special place in his life. Deep condolences to his family. Thank you for sharing Mike with so many of us.

Mike was a wonderful friend and mentor during my fellowship in Boston from 1973-76 . He remained a great friend for many years after. His common sense way of thinking and extensive knowledge are things I have tried to emulate throughout my career.
