MICHAEL MCCABE Obituary

McCABE, Michael Beloved husband, father and friend, passed away suddenly on September 12, 2024, at the age of 62, after a brave and enduring battle with Huntington's Disease. Born on March 14, 1962, in Chicago, IL, Michael was a cherished son of the late Teddy and Susie McCabe. He spent his formative years in Dedham, MA and Princeton, NJ and graduated from The Canterbury School in New Milford, CT, where he was a standout athlete on an undefeated football team and the captain of the varsity lacrosse team. After graduating from Kenyon College, Michael's passion for the culinary arts led him to École de Cuisine La Varenne in Paris, where he earned his Grand Dimplôme certificate. He embarked on a distinguished career as a chef in Boston, working at renowned restaurants, including Rebecca's, L'Espalier, Mistral, The Four Seasons and P.F. Changs. His culinary skills were also showcased during his time with the Kraft Group, where he prepared meals for the New England Patriots, a team he adored. In Boston, Michael found his true joy in his family. He married Liz Spangler and together they raised their two beloved sons, Oliver and Ben in Dedham. Michael was deeply committed to his family, never missing a game, art show, or school performance. He also devoted countless hours coaching Dedham Youth Lacrosse, sharing his love of the sport with his boys. His warmth, kindness and unwavering support were the bedrock of his family life. Michael's love for Boston sports, tennis and fishing were more than hobbies, they were integral parts of who he was and he shared these passions generously with all who crossed his path. His culinary talents shone brightly in his home kitchen, where he often cooked meals for friends and family, creating a space of comfort and joy. Upon his diagnosis with Huntington's Disease in 2017, Michael faced the challenge with extraordinary courage and resilience. He became a dedicated advocate, speaking at Huntington's Disease conferences across the country to raise awareness and offer hope. His personal journey and insights were a beacon of strength for many and he was a passionate supporter of ongoing research and treatment efforts, working closely with his friend and doctor, Dr. H. Diana Rosas of Massachusetts General Hospital. Michael leaves behind his devoted life partner, Liz; and their two sons, Oliver Michael McCabe and Benjamin Hart McCabe. He is also survived by his four siblings, Pamela McCabe Haley of Marblehead, MA, Sheila S. McCabe of Denver, CO, Wendy M. Messick and her husband, Scott of Spring Hill, TN and Christopher J. McCabe and his wife, Helen of South Burlington, VT. Additionally, he is survived by nine nieces and nephews, Molly, Charlotte and Miles McCabe, Faye, Andrew and Grace Haley, Chris Grey and his wife, Kate, Spencer Grey and his wife, Ashley and Olivia McCabe. A celebration of Michael's life will be held on Saturday, September 28, at St. Paul's Church in Dedham, MA, at 11AM. In lieu of flowers, donations in Michael's memory can be made to the Huntington's Disease Society of America at www.hdsa.org For online guestbook, gfdoherty.com George F. My deepest condolences to Michael's family and friends. I have many fond memories of Michael. The one that sticks out most prominently is meeting Michael and Liz in London (25+ years ago!) and traveling on the Eurostar together to Paris. Sitting at Café Deux Magots, sipping cafe au lait and people watching. Always such a nice guy with a bright smile and a kind word. My heart goes out to you all, especially to Oliver and Ben, of whom Michael was so adoring and proud. I'm so very sorry for your loss.

The first time I met Mike was when he moved onto the same floor as my family. He went out of his way to drop off a package we had waiting for us downstairs, and with a smile, introduced himself. That same kindness always made my day when I´d see him and Sonny at the dog park, and got me through a difficult time too. The last time we talked he was very excited to show me his new and improved fish tank. My condolences to the McCabes, he was a wonderful neighbor.

Hello. Mike was roommate at Canterbury our sophomore year. So many laughs....Mike was a big fan of Steve Martin and we´d listen to his comedy album weekly. We´d quote lines constantly.....and laugh. Mike´s father and my father attended Canterbury together. That was our first common bond. Another bond was that Mike and I were the only freshman to letter in lacrosse as varsity players. Mike as a goalie. I called Mike to see if he could make our 20th reunion....interestingly he was very on the lacrosse field coaching.
Great, forever memories for me.
So sorry for your loss.
