MICHAEL MCCARTHY Obituary

McCARTHY, Michael A. Age 73, of Hingham, MA, passed away peacefully on September 25, 2021, after a brave battle with Alzheimer's Disease.

Michael was the devoted husband of Maryellen McCarthy, the amazing father of Christine and her husband Tony Chiulli, Michael and his wife Karen McCarthy, Jennifer and her husband Michael Gavin, and Brian McCarthy, and the most outstanding grandfather to William Gavin, Casey McCarthy, Jessica Gavin, Madison McCarthy, Nicholas Chiulli, Matthew Gavin, Colleen Chiulli, Alyssa Chiulli, Lauren Chiulli and Daniel Martinez. Michael was the son of the late John and Eleanor McCarthy and brother to Maureen (Jack) Ghublikian, the late Paul McCarthy, and Jack (Cathy) McCarthy. He was the brother-in-law to the late Aelreda (Neil) Dashkoff, Helen Flanders, Anne (John) Donovan and Christine (Eric) Koenig and uncle to many nieces and nephews.

Michael was born in Dorchester on February 5,1948 and was educated in Boston from start to finish, attending Boston College High School, Boston State College and was awarded his Doctorate in Education from Boston College. Michael was a lifelong educator that dedicated his career to helping children in Boston as a 40 year employee of Boston Public Schools. Michael started teaching at the Thompson Middle School and continued his career at the Rogers Middle School, where he spent 35 years as a teacher, assistant principal and principal. His legacy of "Tradition of Excellence" and his leadership lived on long after his retirement. Following retirement from Boston Public Schools, at the behest of Boston College, Michael answered the call to be Head of School at St. Columbkille Parochial School where he again inspired children. He finished his educational career by serving as a member of the Archbishop Williams High School Board of Trustees for 9 years.

Michael was an avid Boston sports fan with a special connection to the Boston Red Sox. Michael combined his passion for baseball and desire to support the children of Boston by creating the Boston Baseball Camp over 30 years ago. The camp has and continues to be a source of fun and excitement for all the coaches and campers.

Dr. Michael A. McCarthy was a positive influence to many and will be remembered as a kind, loving husband; father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. Michael will be truly missed by his family and friends who will now take comfort in knowing that he did his very best in life and is now resting in peace.

Mr. McCarthy literally changed my life. I was student of his at the William Barton Rogers and was constantly in trouble. He could have very well expelled me my 7th grade year but he didn´t and made me promise to not make him look like a fool his exact words. My 8th grade year I made good on my promise and improved my grades , stayed out of trouble and made the school basketball and track team. We won championships in both sports that year and our biggest supporter was definitely Mr. McCarthy. He would pull me in his office to check in on my progress and never let up on me. Always reminding me of my promise to him and that once I graduated he wanted to see big things from me. He was great man I was blessed to have crossed his path. Love you Mr. McCarthy you will truly be missed. My condolences to his family.

Mr. McCarthy was my Principal at the Rogers Middle School. He was always so kind and always had a smile on his face. I remember his famous line that graduation will come "This quick" and he snapped his fingers. He was definitely telling the truth because before I knew it I was graduating! He will be missed.
My condolences to you and yours.

Dearest Maryellen, my deepest sympathies to you and all your beautiful family on the passing of your beloved Michael. So many lovely memories of fun times spent in your home. I will always remember Michael as a true gentleman, in every way. His gentle kind manner, his great love of conversation and a good old Irish song. I'm so heartbroken for you all, sending you much love and prayers for strength at this difficult time. One less gentle soul on earth, one more angel in Heaven.
