MONTEAL YERBY Obituary

YERBY, Monteal May 96, of Boston, died August 10, 2018 at Belmont Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Belmont, MA. A community and political activist, world traveler, and entrepreneur, she was married to the late Dr. Alonzo Smythe Yerby from 1943 until his death in 1994. Born in Chicago, IL to the late James and Monteal May, she earned a B.S. in Library Science from the University of Chicago in 1941 where she met her husband. During their 51-year marriage, she supported her husband in his struggle to provide healthcare to all Americans. Widely traveled, her linguistic skills were a significant asset when she and her husband worked in Germany after WWII. She established an import-export business with artisans in Ghana, and supported musicians by being one of the few landlords who would rent to them in the 1970's. Enraged by the events of the 1968 Democratic Convention, she joined the party and actively worked for change, becoming an alternate delegate for George McGovern. She attended the First International Women's Conference and was active in local politics. She left a legacy of active involvement which was an inspiration to her family and friends. Mrs. Yerby was very proud of her three children: Dr. Mark S. Yerby of Bend, OR, the late Lynne E. Yerby of Boston, MA, and Kris Yerby of Concord, MA. She also leaves her cherished granddaughters: Tess M. Yerby of Durham, NC and Siena N. Yerby of Brooklyn, NY. A memorial service will be held in her honor at First Parish in Concord at 3 pm on Sunday, October 7, 2018. Contributions in her memory can be made to the Southern Poverty Law Center or Planned Parenthood.

I write this has one of Pete´s many good friends and also has President Emeritus of The Audubon Circle Neighborhood Association. Pete was instrumental in the preservation of ACNA and "Boston´s Finest Pocket Neighborhood", Audubon Circle . Her smile, wit and intelligence set an example for us all.

As I wrote now almost 4 years ago, Pete (as I knew her) was a neighbor of mine, and I remember her so clearly. She was beautiful and charming, and at the same time forthright and unstinting about expressing her opinion. I valued her friendship and admired her commitment to her family and her community. I miss her still, and I also miss her daughter Lynne. The neighborhood is less vibrant and genteel without them.

Mrs. Yerby was always warm, loving, gracious, and kind to all of the Macchia's. We loved having her a part of each holiday our family shared together and her hearty laugh will be sorely missed by all.
Lots of love to Kris, Carol, Tess, Siena, Mark and family,
Steve and Ruth Macchia
Bekah, Nate, Ashley, and Brenna too

Pete and Lynne were my neighbors for many years. I admired Pete for her gentle and at the same time heartfelt and incisive views on things, her great laugh and amazing energy. Lynne and I - and our dogs - went on many walks together, and I loved her laugh, as well, and her warm, kind ways and always friendly smile. It was a real pleasure to spend time with each of them, two wonderfully smart, vibrant women, and I have missed them both. My most sincere condolences to the family, with a toast to Pete's long life, and much sympathy for losing Lynne too soon.

Dear Yerby family, Kent and I were so sorry to hear about the loss of your mom and grandmother. She was such a sharp dresser, so politically savvy, and an outgoing lady who clearly loved and was so proud of her family. Our prayers are with each of you, Love, Kent, Ben, Robin, Ben, and Maya
