MORTON BARDFIELD Obituary

BARDFIELD, Morton L. Formerly of Dorchester and Brookline, MA, Mort passed away on June 26, 2012 surrounded by his loving wife and family on the island of St. Maarten. He was laid to rest after services conducted by Chabad St. Maarten on June 29, 2012, with military honors. Beloved husband of Claire (Medcalf) Bardfield for 36 years, devoted father of David, Melissa and Edward of Brookline and St. Maarten. Cherished grandfather of Lucas and Aliyah Bardfield. Brother of Dr. Louis Bardfield of Anguilla and Adele Cooper of Newton, MA. Uncle of Libby, JoAnne and Susan Cooper, Alan Bardfield, Shaun and Darren Bowen. Cousin of Lynda, Laura and David Bardfield, Louise Hirsch, William and Howard Levy, Bruce Brierley and many others. Father-in-law of Cherienne Bardfield, brother-in-law of Judith Bardfield and Hilary Bowen. A man of many talents and varied interests, he was the founder and Chief Executive Officer of East Caribbean Cellular, Comm-Systems Ltd., and a successful real estate developer. A pioneer in cellular communication, Mort had over 50 years of professional experience in the communication and electronic fields. He served as a communications officer, editor-publisher, engineer, systems planner and consultant to industry in the United States and Caribbean. He built and operated the largest multi island cellular system in the Caribbean, and was instrumental in bringing the North American telephone numbering system to St. Maarten. He was a member of the Massachusetts National Guard, he then enlisted in the United States Army Reserve where he rose through the ranks to Lieutenant Colonel. Prior to his retirement, he served as an aide and advisor to several former members of the Massachusetts State Legislature. Mort's passion for HAM radio broadcasting remained an important part of his life; his expertise in two way radio communication increased law enforcement efficiency and resulted in new and innovative ways to protect the public. He served as Deputy Sheriff of Suffolk County for 12 years and was a consultant to various police departments throughout the Commonwealth. Mort was instrumental in drafting the first legislation to implement the life saving 911 emergency response system in Massachusetts. He also designed and implemented the very first UHF radio system for the Brookline Police Department where he developed life long friendships with several police officers throughout the years. Mort was a beloved friend and benefactor to many individuals and organizations, specifically those serving law enforcement, the United States Military and countless others. His indomitable spirit touched the hearts and minds of all who were fortunate to know him and he will be deeply missed. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made in Mort's memory to the Wounded Warrior Project or a charity of your choice.
