NICHOLAS SAFFORD Obituary

SAFFORD, Nicholas Heath
Age 93, passed away peacefully, speaking words of gratitude and love, the morning of May 15, 2025, in his beloved Rockport, MA home.

Nicholas was predeceased by his wife, Martha Bliss Safford. Born in Boston, MA to George Sisson Safford and Hilda Heath Safford.

Nick grew up in Wellesley, MA and graduated from Amherst College in 1954 with a BA in History. Nick served as an officer in the Air Force on Okinawa, from 1954 to 1956. Nick first joined the Trust Department at State Street and then David L. Babson & Co., a fortuitous move as he found his mentor in David Babson. When David retired, Nick had the capabilities and confidence to found his own firm with the DLB philosophy, starting in 1979 and ultimately incorporating in 1983, as Nicholas H. Safford & Co., Inc. Passionate about his work, he happily came to the office daily up until mid-November 2024.

A lifelong learner with a love for finding dynamic companies, his work ethic, client-first focus and integrity are the hallmarks of his enduring legacy in the business that continues to bear his name. Nick carried his analyst mindset with great discipline into all his hobbies, such as gardening, jogging, eating healthy foods, studying rainfall and length of days, competitive and recreational sailing and reading/listening to podcasts.

Nicholas is survived by his son, John A. Safford (wife, Deborah) of Hamilton, MA; his daughter, Jennie A. B. Meyer (husband, James) of West Gloucester, MA; and six grandchildren, Thomas, Matthew and Emma Rose Safford; Oliver, Delilah and Carl Meyer. "Mr. Safford," as I called him, was our neighbor. He was still walking the neighborhood and giving my dogs greetings, cookies, and pats on the head until very recently - a lovely gentleman who always had a kind word - he will be missed by all.
