SHETH, Niranjan "Niru" Jamnadas Of Acton, MA and Austin, TX, passed away on September 5, surrounded by family members. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Helen L. Sheth and their three sons and families. Mr. Sheth was born and raised in the city of Rajkot in Gujarat, India, by his parents, Jamnadas and Lilavati Sheth. He was the third of six children and brother to Sarala ("Saryuben"), Kirit,
Arun, Shobhana ("Shobhi") and Varsha.
Niru attended preparatory school in Mumbai, India before graduating from Sydenham College of Commerce and Economics in 1965. Following graduation, he assisted his brother, Kirit, in establishing Mumbai-based Hakotronics Pvt. Ltd., an engineering and software company. In January of 1967, upon the urging of his older brother, Niru set on a great adventure to attend graduate school at Suffolk University in Boston. His introduction to America was initially eased by the love and care of Ronnie and Lydia Woodman, his "American Parents" and their family in Cambridge, Anthony ("Uncle Tony" to Niru's three boys) and Rose Cimino of Milford, MA, and then by Helen L. Miller. who would become his wife and constant companion through life. The two met in 1968 in Kenmore Square and despite growing up 10,000
miles apart, realized they were quickly bonded by their shared curiosity, independent spirits, commitment to social justice, and remarkably, a shared birthday, April 19, Patriot's Day. Niru and Helen spent their life together learning about, celebrating and instilling the virtue and values of one another's cultures and traditions in their three children, six grandchildren and extended network of family and dear friends. Niru was happiest when he was surrounded by and engaging with his family here and abroad. In addition to his five siblings and his wife's six siblings, Niru was a loving uncle to 27 nieces and nephews. Throughout his life, Niru was notorious for opening his home and sharing his passion for cooking (and eating) Indian food with family, friends and neighbors. He was also an enthusiastic conversation partner and ardent cheerleader of everyone lucky enough to call him father, grandfather, brother, uncle or friend. In a word, Niru was beloved.
Nine years into their marriage, Niru and Helen settled in Acton, MA, to raise their sons, Neil, Brian and Nathan. In Acton, Niru continued his business career, first at Simplex, then at Digital Equipment Corporation, before starting and running his own company, Multinational Ltd. An eternal optimist, Niru encouraged others to pursue their dreams, believing that through hard work, persistence and intelligence anything was possible. In the latter years of his life, he made the dreams of many Indian young men and woman a reality through his philanthropic work with the Sarjan Foundation, a charitable organization dedicated to improving the quality of life of the underserved through vocational training and employment placement in his native Gujarat, India.
