Norman Knable Obituary

Was born June 6, 1922, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Jacob and Rose Knable. He received a Bachelor of Science in Physics from Ohio State University in 1944. From then until the end of World War Two, while a graduate student, he worked at the M.I.T. Radiation Laboratory to develop radar for use by the allies in the war. He received a Ph.D. in physics from University of California at Berkeley in 1951. He turned down the opportunity to continue there in protest of the University's effort to require that faculty sign a loyalty oath (this was at the height of the McCarthy era). Instead, he joined the faculty at the University of Illinois at Urbana. He subsequently left to concentrate on research first at the U.S. Department of Standards, and later at Columbia University and NASA in Cambridge, MA. When the NASA branch in Cambridge closed, he continued at the Volpe National Transportation Systems Center. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Bobbie, his son Jacob, his sister and brother-in-law Shirley and Harry Ziff, his brother Sidney (whose wife, Miriam died last year), as well as his niece Deborah Kopp, her husband Michael, and their son Adam; and his nephew Robert Knable, his wife Dorothy, and their sons Sonny and Jim, and Jim's wife, Rosey. A memorial service will be held on Monday, October 1, at 11:00 a.m. at the Bigelow Chapel at Mt. Auburn Cemetery, followed by the burial there. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to one of the following: The Audubon Society, the Sierra Club, the Southern Poverty Law Center, or the Union of Concerned Scientists. Dear Bobbie,
I'm sad to read that Norman died, and I wish the best of everything for you and for Jacob.
Norman was very kind and very helpful to me, and I'm grateful. I last visited him in the spring of 2000, not recent, but I'm not young, either, and don't travel much. I thank you, too, for your kind hospitality to my wife and me.
