PATRICIA KUSH Obituary

KUSH, Patricia Jeanne 56, of Lexington, passed away peacefully on October 19, 2015 at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers, after two years of living with cancer. Pat was a loving mother and wife, an advocate for the adoption of children, and an electrical engineer. Pat was born in 1959 in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania, and grew up in State College, Penn., where her father was an electrical engineer on the research faculty of the Pennsylvania State University. Pat was the daughter of the late Mary Ann E. Kush (Posey) and Louis J Kush, Jr. As a teenager in Pennsylvania, Pat made and sold hand-crafted children's hand puppets, and co-founded the Tallyrand Park Arts Festival in Bellefonte. Pat followed in her father's engineering footsteps and earned her B.S. in electrical engineering from Penn State. While working as a student at the Applied Research Laboratory there, Pat met her husband-to-be, Lou. The two married and moved to Natick, Massachusetts, ultimately settling in Lexington, Mass. in 1987. Pat continued her schooling and received an M.S.E.E. from Northeastern University, while working at the C. S. Draper Laboratory. After Draper, Pat joined GTE, which became her life-long employer (GTE, GTE Laboratories, Bell Atlantic, Verizon), where she worked most recently for many years with a small team advancing the architecture of Verizon's telecommunications infrastructure. Over the years, Pat received many awards for her technical contributions at work. Pat and her husband Lou adopted their three children in the mid-1990's, and the children she met and experiences she had as an adoptive parent gave Pat a new sensitivity and compassion for children in need of families-and in adoption as a solution for that need. Pat and a team that she rallied were among the top fundraisers for the annual Massachusetts Adoption Resource Exchange "Walk for Adoption" (now the "Jordan's Walk for Adoption"). She was supported by generous co-workers, family and friends, and made this event a priority. Even after Pat became ill, she insisted on raising funds and participating in the Walk. At her church, Pat co-led an annual adoption Mass and gathering of adoptive families; teddy bears used as a part of this celebration were donated annually to be given to children being adopted at local courthouses. Pat was also active in helping to keep her church from being closed, and investigated and brought forward the two-parish model as a way to relieve the push to close the church. Pat fought intensely to maintain her health. By her personal strength and with the support of family and friends, Pat managed to live her life as fully as possible during her illness. In 2015, she traveled to the Massachusetts State House and spoke in favor of forming a committee to raise awareness of the need for early detection of ovarian cancer to improve outcomes in treating the disease with which she was afflicted. Pat is survived by her husband of 31 years Louis R. Quartararo, daughter Alexandra and her husband Aaron Collins and their newborn son, daughter Patricia, son Louis, sister Mary Kathleen (Kay) Kush, brother Thomas J. Kush and his wife Laurie, Lou's parents, and many in-laws, nieces and nephews. Funeral will be held from the Douglass Funeral Home, 51 Worthen Road, Lexington, on Saturday, October 24, at 8AM, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Sacred Heart Church, Lexington, at 9AM. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Visiting hours Friday from 4-8PM. In memory of Pat, donations may be made in Pat's name to the Massachusetts Adoption Resource Exchange, 45 Franklin Street, 5th Floor, Boston, MA 02110-1301 (or online at www.mareinc.org). Interment Westview Cemetery, Lexington.

I have fond memories of Patty during our teenage years. We were both in wheelchairs at the same time recuperating from serious injuries, Pattys back and my broken femur. One afternoon at the movie theatre, my wheelchair brake came loose. As I started to wheel down the aisle in the theatre, Patty and I had quite a laugh. We even laughed about it when I spoke to her on the phone (a few months prior to her death) as we reminisced and shared things going on in our lives. Im glad we had the chance to talk, even though Patty was undergoing a chemo treatment at the same time we spoke. Patty was caring, loving, and devoted to her friends and family. I will miss her.

Mary Kay -- No one expects to read an obituary for a childhood friend's baby sister. Patty clearly had a fulfilling and inspiring life. I pray that you are comforted knowing that she made the world a better place.

Pat was a colleague and a friend. I could write pages about what most people already know. Pat was a joy to work with, to talk to, to be around. I count her as a colleague and a friend. And I have missed her the last two years and will continue to miss her for years to come. I had the joy of visiting her about a year ago and spending a couple hours with her. I will cherish that time. Unfortunately, living in Texas, I wasn't able to visit her frequently, and when I was in town, she was often too weak from chemo to accept visitors. I regret that I didn't get to see more of her last, but I value the time I was able to spend with her.

To Lou and her kids, my deepest sympathies. I am thankful her suffering and struggle is over. I am thankful for the profound impact she had on your lives and you on hers. Always know that she lives on in you.

So saddened by this news and praying for you Lou and your entire family. From the moment I met Pat, while rolling T -shirts for NOCC walk, I was inspired by her positive attitude. The moments we spent together, I cherish. I always will remember her speech at the State House. She will always be with us in spirit. I will continue fighting in her memory

Though we only saw each other as small children cousin, the past year as we conversed on Facebook allowed me to know you more closely, and come to Love you dearly. As I had hoped to visit you this past year, that never happened, but now, which has become your complete healing and peace I will see you again one day, and there will be no sorrow, pain, or affliction. We can then rejoice with each other and others in perfect peace. I'll remember the Bridge lights that your family had done for you for a long time to come. Such Love and respect from them to their Mother. Love and remembrance in Jesus name, Cousin Mary Beth

Pat was one of the NOCC's champions! Her sparkling personality and positive outlook made such an impact on all who met her. She articulated her struggle with ovarian cancer so effectively at a public hearing at the MA State House in front of Senate and House members of the Public Health Committee, that it resulted in the establishment of a special commission to study the impact of ovarian cancer in Massachusetts. We, and all who are affected by ovarian cancer, are deeply grateful to her. We extend our deepest and sincere condolences to the Kush and Quartararo families.

Lou and Family,

Our deepest condolences.

For us at Verizon, Pat was an amazing colleague. It's impossible to share in a short note how much of a difference her life made to so many of us.

We continued to be inspired by her battle even after she left on Medical Leave. Ever the Engineer and Network Architect, I remember her telling us that she was sharing different plots of her blood & other counts data with her Medical Team. We could always count on Pat to give us another view of the data, another approach to testing and design.

She made a positive difference everywhere she went.

Thinking of my sweet and precious cousin. You fought a great fight for a good long time. My prayers were always with you. I wish you didn't have to leave us at such a young age. I know our Lord Jesus held your hand as you passed from this world to His. Know that you were loved and will not be forgotten. God bless you Patty. Rest well with our Lord.
